In preparation for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the planners are looking to make the event accessible for delegates - including installing ramps to allow wheelchair users to sit with their delegations on the floor for the first time.

In addition to physical access (which includes accessible shuttle transit, scooters, and the permanent install of wheelchair repair stations at Chicago airports), there are plans to provide ANC earbuds for sensory-sensitive attendees, as well as requesting people eschew using heavy fragrances and supporting masking. Live audio description and ASL interpretation will also be made available for those with diminished sight/hearing as well.

This is fantastic news, and it sounds like they've really thought about a broad range of measures to be broadly inclusive.

This feels very much in keeping with this year's vibe of inclusiveness, and I'm really glad to see it.

I'm just sorry they hadn't made this as much of a priority in the past. But now is an excellent time to change that!

Thank you so much for sharing this, NoxAeternum - I'm really glad to know about this.

(And thanks for introducing me to The 19th, which looks like a really good source for news. I've added it to my reading list.)

If you're visiting Chicago and want to plan for getting around easier, every CTA bus on every bus route can kneel. (And I believe this has been true since shortly after I moved here, 20 years ago!) Not all train stations have elevators (or working elevators unfortunately) but the bus accessibility is pretty great.

I'm nearing 70, so "ramps" aren't the remote :wave-away-sure-whatever: things I thought they were. Being old sucks. Not accommodating old folks sucks harder. The thing that old age takes from you is your pride. (Well, and then your life but you know what I mean.)
