Alain Delon, Smoldering French Film Star, Dies at 88

Alain Delon, angel-faced tough guy of international cinema, dies at 88

Alain Delon: a life in pictures

Delon starred in a series of memorable thrillers and historical pictures, including Plein Soleil (aka Purple Noon, the first film adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley), the mesmerizing Le Samouraï directed by Jean-Pierre Melville (and the lesser but still compelling Le Cercle Rouge), the sensual La Piscine featuring sizzling chemistry with Romy Schneider, and the genuinely Kafka-esque mistaken-identity thriller Mr. Klein. Since it's August, La Piscine is the one to pick up if you're curious, and ready to get languid.

(His politics grew execrable over the years; he was a Le Pen supporter. His personal life seems to have been equally unpleasant.)

Le Cercle Rouge

Delon is great. The heist scene is just as great.

Patton Oswalt: In lieu of flowers, Mr. Delon’s family requests that you light a cigarette and stare tragically (but sexily) over the rooftops of an uncaring, twilight metropolis.

I mean, an icon, but one with awful politics.

What a life. It was exhausting just watching it on this side of the silver screen.

Merci, Alain. Say hello to Romy and Dalida for us.

Macron: "un monument français"
le Samouraï: Jef on the metro . . . nicking multiple Citroën DS: you can't get more french monument than that. A one second clip showing Paris car plate 2709 RR 75 permits obsessive DS insights.
