The giant gurgling earthworms of Gippsland. The secrets of giant earthworms that live beneath the rolling hills of eastern Victoria — where they can be heard but are rarely seen — are set to be revealed in new research. This is a species of annelid worm called the giant Gippsland earthworm (Megascolides australis). It earns the name giant because an average adult is a metre [3.2 feet] long — making it one of the biggest earthworms in the world.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, it's time to play "Classic Sci-Fi Story, or Unpublished Gullliver's Travels chapter"!

Nah, this is clearly a lost chapter out of Ludvig Prinn's De Vermis Mysteriis.

Five year old me was absolutely entranced by the giant worm museum (atlas obscura) (now closed.)
Cool beasties!

Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and going of Him. May His passage cleanse the world. May He keep the world for His people.

I am fairly freaked out that this is not the biggest earthworm out there.

Gippsland is also the location of what claims to be the world's biggest meat pie bakery and sometimes if I'm walking by there in the wee hours I'll hear... gurgling.
There's more to this than meats the eye.

I had to nope out at the first picture. There's no excuse for a human thumb being anywhere near even a normal worm, but that...thing? I almost dislocated every bone in my body shuddering.
Chariots, if I may propose a new rule of, er, thumb: "If it has fur, I concur; wriggly or slimy? Cor blimey!"

You can hear the gurgling here.
I once visited the Giant Earthworm Museum—sad to hear it's shut. The building was in the shape of a giant worm. (Lying along the ground, not rearing up like a cobra.)
The sound of it makes a bloke squirm:
That's no snake in the earth, it's a worm.
This native of Gippsland
Is giant, and rips land
Asunder, Vic. farmers confirm.

I wonder whether ordinary earthworms gurgle, but too quietly for us to hear.

I like that at least some land owners are considering the needs of subterranean inhabitants of the land as well. I mean, they’re not exactly charismatic megafauna, but they deserve consideration.
