From 21 Aug 2023:
Help is urgently needed to survey the endangered coastal emu population on the NSW north coast.
We don’t know exactly how many coastal emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) remain in this endangered population, but we estimate there are fewer than 50.
Coastal emus were once widespread across north-eastern New South Wales. Now, they live only within Evans Head, Red Rock and the Bungawalbin area.
This population of coastal emus is important because it's genetically different from all other emu populations in Australia.

I have loved emus for my entire life and had no idea there were subspecies! TIL. Save the coastal emu!

Story time:
I own a fruit tree farm in California, and I am kind of known locally for being a hopeless animal lover. Four years ago, there was a big fire 20 miles north of me, and I opened my barn and pasture to a bunch of animals that needed evacuating. Amidst the chaos of extra chickens, goats, dogs, and people camping in our front yard, a farm worker called me. He said, "I have two emus in my truck I pulled out of the fire, and I think you still have a barn stall open, so can I put them there for the weekend?" I said yes, and then immediately googled, what is an emu.
These two frickin dinosaurs arrived, were put safely in their stall, and I was kind of terrified of them. I'd throw their food in twice a day, gingerly lower in a water bucket, and expected them to be gone in a week at most. But their owners tragically lost their home and property. So, it's been a long weekend, but Lucy and Ricky have become some of my favorite pasture pets. They are gentle, affectionate, humorous and easy.
