I will sing one song, please give me five minutes of your time!

Japanese singer-songwriter Sayuri has passed away at the age of 28. She had been on indefinite hiatus as of July this year due to vocal dysphonia. For those unfamiliar with her work, she left behind two wonderful performances on the YouTube channel The First Take, Koukai no Uta (About a Voyage) and Mikazuki (Crescent Moon) (English captions are available for both songs).

Also known as Sanketsu Shoujo Sayuri (Hypoxia Girl Sayuri), she was an active busker in Tokyo both before and after she was picked up by a major record label. She would start off her public song performances with the introduction "I am Hypoxia Girl Sayuri. I will sing one song, please give me 5 minutes of your time!" She recreated this atmosphere for her First Take performance.

As an artist, she was most well known for her songs that became anime EDs, including About a Voyage which was used in Season 4 of My Hero Academia and more recently the ED for Lycoris Recoil, Hana no Tou (Tower of Flower).

She married her husband, Ama Arashi of the duo Misekai, in March of this year. Three weeks ago, the group released a song Fleeting Girl (English captions available) which gains new context in light of the recent announcement.

Here is a sampling of some of her tracks that are well-loved by her fans:

Furaregai Girl (written by Youjirou Noda of RADWIMPS)
Sore wa Chisana Hikari no You na (Like a Small Light)
Heikousen (Parallel Lines)
Reimei (Daybreak)
Raise ni Aou (Let's Meet in the Afterlife)

devastating. i came across her work late, mainly from LycoReco's ed but loved it so much i sought out more. listening to her albums has been a surefire uplift for me since i first heard them, each track bringing such fun, expressiveness, and rollicking high energy.

Sayuri wasn't someone that I consider myself a die-hard fan of, but I've had a handful of her songs consistently in my rotation since I've heard them. I actually just got around to watching Lycoris Recoil last week and have been listening to Hana no Tou a lot as a result. I was shocked when I saw the news this morning, as I don't follow her closely enough to know that her health problems had gotten more serious as of late.

The raw sincerity in her voice was what kept me coming back to my favorite few tracks.

It's an utter tragedy that she had to leave us at only 28 years old.

What a sad way to be introduced to a wonderful musician.

It hit me some years ago that “Mikazuki” - literallly ‘3-day moon’ - 🌙 - is so poetic wrt relationships because so much is still waiting to be revealed.

Alright, maybe I'm a bigger fan than I initially thought I was. I've been listening to Sayuri pretty much on repeat and also rewatching her performances on YouTube since her passing.

Furaregai Girl is now going to be one of those songs that'll always at least put a little knot in my throat and get me a little misty eyed when it comes on. Her last three lines just hit supremely differently now that she's gone.

そろそろ時間だ
ワタシはいくね
次の涙も溜まった頃よ

It's almost time,
I'm heading out, okay?
I've saved up enough tears for next time.
