Squeak the Baby Porcupine

Watch Squeak go from being so tiny she can’t eat a peanut, to being able to eat one peanut at a time, to chomping through sweet potato slices like a champ.

Squeak’s young mom is Spike, who had her quite late in the season and is, um, an imperfect parent. Squeak is feisty, pushy, and one of many wild neighbors.

I have been enjoying watching her grow, specifically, but there are a lot of other characters, like Chonkers who has mastered cups, Prickly with magnificent hair, and patient Pip.

More fine dining with Squeak.

Oh man these guys are so charming.

I'm amused at the compulsion to tell a small animal how tiny it is. "you're so small! You really are very small"

The first time I encountered a porcupine in the wild was weird because they just don't give a fuck. Deer, rabbits, squirrels will all startle and run away when you accidentally sneak up on them, and it's usually a bad sign (rabies) when an animal doesn't immediately scurry away when you come across them. That porcupine just did not care that I had stumbled across it as long as I remained more than ten feet away. If I got closer than that it just passive-aggressively moved a little farther away and continued eating.

Porcupines are frustratingly cute. You want to snuggle and pet them, but you usually can't. It's unfair.

I am very impressed at Chonker's dexterity with the cup!
