Itβs good to see some healthy youthful exuberance over here. And yes it makes the government uncomfortable.

The ADV China guys covered this yesterday. Their goofy vlogs, run Stateside these days, are an interesting window into the weirdness that is PRC.

Man, our little Sunday group ride of 30-40 people can really take over a cafe for a minute. I can only imagine what -- actually, scratch that, I can't even imagine what this is like for the staff and other patrons of that dumpling place!

Somewhat related:
Elsewhere in the GDR, people were also testing the state's boundaries with environmental action, be it by planting trees, collecting rubbish or cycling through cities to protest against air pollution and promote car-free transport. The Stasi had its eyes on all of those groups, including a surveillance operation against the cyclists code-named "Ventil" or "Valve", as in, bike valve.posted by rum-soaked space hobo at 6:42 AM on November 13, 2024
Amazing how something as innocent as this can also be an act of defiance.
ADV China would be an interesting FPP on its own. Those guys have had a quite an odyssey.

This is awesome. I'm getting definite #squadgoal vibes as something to aspire to with our Friday night group social ride :-D
That scale is insane. There were about 1500 folk on the Ride to the Sun overnight ride in Scotland this year, and the chippies and anything else that was open in Moffat at the half-way point were just a huge queue. This is an order of magnitude more people.

One factor that made the ride popular is that it's mostly going downhill heading into Kaifeng. The students left rental bikes behind in Kaifeng and went back by train afterwards -- you can imagine the headache it caused for the bike rental companies.
