I am happy for her. I’m also one sharing reminded of that old saw about how the right controls the law but wants to control the culture, and the left controls the culture but wants to control the law.

This is great. It's a one-day thing, probably an extra day or two of rehearsals. It's not like she's missing court days or something. No different from a justice going on a hunting trip, vacation, golfing.
I think one of the posters annoyed by it should tell us why.

I’m annoyed by it because I think she could do better than a jukebox musical.

one thing's for sure
millions of US Americans won't bat an eye when Bret Kavanaugh gets appointed to the SC, millions are oblivious to any conflict of interest with Clarence Thomas, but people are absolutely going to LOSE THEIR SHIT that this Black woman is involved with musical theatre. This is clearly proof Jackson is not equal to the appointment.

I find the celebration of it among liberals mildly annoying - I mean, totally, good for her! She deserves to have fun sometimes! But this isn't a "win" for anyone besides Justice Jackson. I have no problem with her gushing over the experience, but I find the veneration/celebrity of Supreme Court justices among liberals (see previously, RBG) politically unhelpful.

The Supreme Court should be made so large that individual justices aren’t famous.

Being onstage in a play takes not only talent but specific skills that none of the conservative justices have. I'm okay with celebrating this, because Alito could never.

It’s her having fun in public while the Court she sits on is making things very un-fun for the rest of us.
Optics.

The Return of the Circular Virtue Signalling Squad. Optics? More like myoptics. Holding her as representative for the whole 'un-fun' court on which she is in the minority is bogue. I refuse to clutch my pearls. She is the most simpatico justice on the court being most simpatico and I see no problem in that.

I would certainly hope that if the theater company eventually has a case before the court, Jackson would recuse.

Court's not in session and even if it were, she's just one of three votes. Losing 6-3 is no better or worse than 6-2

Hardly seems worth the bother of her coming back then. Perhaps she can just take a condo in Aruba and tell us to fuck off.

Yeah, I think if the theory of the system is that it’s so fucked that we don’t care what the justices would do with their time, that’s a hell of an indicator. I mean, perhaps this is a well-meaning case of being a little too casually glib, but still.
And of course Fox weighs in, so now I have to take some kind of de-facto- stan position and/or start ranting about Alito getting his cheapo knighthood (which is, in point of fact, actually bad) and it just keeps going graaaa.

What is she supposed to do, change rulings with arguments about the law? That isn't what SCOTUS does anymore.
6/9 SCOTUS members are obedient tools of the federalist society. Everything else is set dressing. Until the majority of SCOTUS isn't an obedient tool, the remaining members can do whatever they want: they are not relevant, their opinions are not relevant, and their personal lives aren't relevant.

I'm pretty sure Scalia and RBG played extras in an opera about fifteen years ago - it's not like this is precedent-setting.
