Hate to be that guy, but a reminder that Peter Yarrow admitted to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and only avoided jail time due to a Presidential pardon.

My sixth grade chorus sang “Light One Candle”! I think the choir teacher chose it because it was about Chanukah but was accessible to 1980s middle schoolers and wasn’t Religious. I didn’t realize it was about the holiday until later. This was my first time hearing it in 30 years.

Had a fun brain thing happen a couple years back, where my brain was raging on the refrain of Light One Candle - "Don't let the light go out" - but it instead had the refrain lyrics as "All hail the Ragnarök". At that moment I couldn't grasp the title of the correct song, so consulted my parent folk who may know, and got me to where I needed to be, relieved.

That said, I was like, I need to type out lyrics to this inverse version. They are as drafty drafty as drafty gets - very much a draft. If there's interest with that disclaimer, happy to post here, and have someone take them from there.

Y'all, how could we have forgotten the excellent Daveed Diggs' Puppy for Hanukkah? There was even an FPP about it.

Also: if people can't resist being "That Guy" maybe next time wait until there are a few more comments so you're not shitting the bed right out of the gate maybe

Lyrics-wise, I guess it's not much more complex than "Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel," but I do like listening to the Ladino-language tango "Ocho Kandelikas." (Pink Martini version, or performed by the composer Flory Jagoda, complete with performance notes for her audience.)

I do my best not to comment in my threads because I don't want to be accused of threadsitting, but...

rikschell, you are not helping.

This is a post about Hanukkah music because metafilter has seen a thousand different posts about Christmas in the past month and zero posts about Hanukkah in two years, so I thought I could make that difference. It is not a post about Peter Yarrow. Despite your careful use of words like "reminder" and "known," probably nobody besides you knows who Peter Yarrow is. Maybe he's the Peter in Peter, Paul & Mary? That's unfortunate. But this is not a post about Peter Yarrow. He is one singer in one link among three links about Hanukkah music. Everyone else has understood that this is a post about Hanukkah music and has contributed to the post, perhaps recognizing that by doing so, they are not providing any aid or comfort to Peter Yarrow. You have not contributed to anything. You have not protected children. You have not provided alternate music. All you have done is try to shit on the one good thing Jews have on this site.

I know that the refrain is "flag and move on" but I flagged your comment and nothing happened, so here we are.

Mod note: Two comments have been removed. Folks, please move on from the Peter Yarrow derail and focus on the subject of the post, non traditional takes on Hanukkah songs.

Rikschell, stop trying to derail this thread. You're welcome to create your own post about whatever subject you want, but refrain from commenting further in this thread unless you're contributing to its subject, thank you.
