(Oh, my goodness, 2N2222 - your comment made me wonder what Linda Lavin performances my library might have on hand, and I discovered that she read the audiobook of Ruth Bader Ginsberg's My Own Words.)
I used to love watching her on Alice. I think it was many years before I learned what a force she was on Broadway.
Thank you for posting this, clavdivs. I am glad of this chance to think about her and her excellent work.

RIP. A terrific actress! I loved Alice the sitcom as a kid. Maybe it was how she portrayed a working mom. Mel was great to watch each week too. It was Flo (I think) who said "Kiss my grits" which to this teen was a great way to curse without cursing.

(All in memory of the many opening themes for Alice she re-recorded each season, each of which got progressively jazzier and more difficult to sing. Seriously go check them out on YouTube.)

She had a great and sadly too brief run on Barney Miller too -- I believed they hoped to make her a regular, but she already had _Alice_ in her sights.
