MacArthur Foundation genius grants -- I didn't get one this year, but Ben Katchor did. So did some other astonishing people, such as Patricia J. Williams, of whose column "Diary of a Mad Law Professor" in The Nation I am a particular fan.

Hey! Anne Carson won a genius grant! I know Autobiography of Red made a big splash, but I think Plainwater is better--one of the two or three best books of poetry from the Nineties that I've read.

The MacArthur strikes me as consistently "on." In previous years they've given 'em out to David Foster Wallace, Thomas Pynchon, Jorie Graham, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman ... not a dud in the bunch.
