It's A Bird! It's A Plane! It's Terrifica! This supergirl herorine patrols the New York City single's scene bedecked in her scarlet outfit and gold cat-eye mask to help single women out of potentially dangerous situations.

Wow, that woman needs some sex.

"Sarah prefers not to reveal her last name so that she can protect her anonymity and still lead some degree of a normal life."

Yes, because clearly anyone who knows her would never recognize her in that mask.

Yeesh.

So... drunk men deserve whatever they get, the lousy bastards!?

"I do this because women are weak. They are easily manipulated, and they need to be protected from themselves and most certainly from men and their ill intentions toward them."

Yikes, that's downright Puritan. This girl must have gone to Brown University.

Also, is there a male superhero to protect poor, innocent drunk men from going home with ugly chicks?

Wow, three out of four comments so far are positively Farkian.

Me, I think she's insane but awesome. The world needs more great crazy people doing fun things, not fewer of them. Get yourselves some costumes, you whiny boys!

In these days of STDs and serial killers, what could it hurt?

But even I find this a tad weird.

Ty Webb, I'll be your superhero. Call me. We'll talk.

But first, we have to give Terrifica a makeover. Red is so NOT her color.

Of course, being a superheroine and all, she's probably wearing a wig, or using her insidious mind control powers to disguise her true appearance from all those that would presume to destroy her and her noble quest for justice and sobriety!

How does she know when she's not wanted? What if a woman's drunk, but still honestly interested in going home with the guy she's met. To what extent does this superheroine "save" them, does she physically prevent them from leaving, or just make such an uncomfortable scene for all involved that the mood is killed? Delightful.

Dressing in a red leotard, hanging out at bars drinking Shirley Temples is not exciting. It can get pretty dull. …

Man. I wish I'd known that years ago. I could have saved myself a lot of tedium.

No, from coming.

i would have to say the scariest thing by far is that faraway, red-pupiled look in her eyes.

"For the past seven years ..."

shes been doing this for seven years?
she looks about 14 in the photo.

Some women inspired by Terrifica, who otherwise has escaped Google. I guess that sort of thing happens when you spend all your free time in clubs rather than online.

Hmm, she's kinda hot. Maybe I'll find her, seduce her, and take advantage of her. Wait, that wouldn't work...
Just kidding!

_sirmissalot_ you're right.

Wolf yea she is too pasty as in pale for red, look how much her eye's stand out. I bet she went with red as in cupid. Maybe she might be better suited in gold or even green..................but not for envy.

PS, whose her dynamic duo, JimmyCap.

"I do this because women are weak. They are easily manipulated, and they need to be protected from themselves and most certainly from men and their ill intentions toward them."

I'm not sure I can find a word for this.

Neo-sexism? retro-misogony? C'mon. On the one hand we have women complaining that they're unfairly portrayed as "weak" "victims", and on the other hand invent a "strong" "hero" to save them - but she's also a woman. Could this mean that some women are strong and some are weak and we can't put them all in the same basket?

It's always nice to see a hero exclude those in need on the basis of gender. You go, girl.

what i need is "SUPEREMBARRO MAN" who does the same sort of thing, except he tells me to go home before i drink the rest of that fifth and completely make an ass of myself in front of people with far better memories than i.

but for the record, i think this kicks ass.

I do this because women are weak. They are easily manipulated, and they need to be protected from themselves

Instead of jumping all over her for this statement, let's modify it to say what she probably means:

I do this because some women are weak. They can be easily manipulated, and they sometimes need to be protected from themselves

There. You go girl. But perhaps she should leave a note with her damsels explaining what she got them out of so they'll know better next time (yeah, right)

I bet the ladies are annoyed by her getting so much attention from the guys. She isnt out to save women lol.

Or maybe "I do this because all women are inherently weak! They are easily manipulated by the cunningness of man, and are in constant need of someone to think for them!" (exclamations added for superhero[ine] emphasis)

Maybe she's a super villian! Oh, the possibilities are endless and losing my interest!

When I clicked on that link I got an ad next to the "Terrifica" article. It featuried some woman dressed in black leather with really, red-dyed hair and was for a television show called "Alias."

Uh...

Don't be fooled, she's actually a super villain! Preventing people from getting the sex they so desperately want.

Seriously though, these kinds of sentiments are ridiculous. I realize there is a difference between men and women in that a man can easily force a woman to have sex with them, while it's very difficult for a woman to force a man to have sex with her, but with two drunk people in a bar how can you really 'blame' the man?

Maybe the guy is really the seduce!
posted by delmoi at 7:15 PM on November 5, 2002

it's very difficult for a woman to force a man to have sex with her

In the sense that force is rarely necessary.

I don't like the name Terrifica though, it doesn't really capture what she does. How about Captain Cockblock? (what?, a woman can't be a captain? shame on you...).

According to archive.org, the ladyfriends link dates to Feb 2001.

This shoots down my first theory, that Terrifica and Fantastico are art students having a little fun with the reporter. The alternative is far sadder: she's completely nuts. And sexist.

Captain Cockblock?

Excellent.

I used to live in Park Slope, and believe me, she's doing a lousy job. Not living up to her mandate AT ALL.

Wait. I think I bedded her.
posted by ParisParamus at 9:23 PM on November 5, 2002

Now that I think of it, I sure could have used Terrifica to save me from the one woman I dated whom I met in a bar. Never again.
