Wembley's demise

Wembley Stadium - Arguably the most famous sports ground in the world, host of the 1966 World Cup final and the 1948 Olympics is being rebuilt. Today the famous twin towers go under the wrecking ball. You can see it all on webcam. Sad end to one of our sporting treasures.
1966 World Cup Final and the 48 Olympics, notwithstanding, who could forget "July 13th 1985", the day we watched Live Aid? :-)
With apologies to John Wesley Harding.

Sad that they couldn't have incorporated the towers into the new design (or is it at a different site)

The towers would be in the goalmouth because of the larger footprint and changed orientation.

I kinda had a boyhood dream of visiting and walking out on the field at night (similar to how Yankee Stadium is often treated in movies). There would be a hush, then the huge lights would come on and I would imagine a crowd cheering for me as I scored the winning goal in a shoot-out.
And I'm an American woman. I'm sure there are many more melancholy people than me.

As long as they don't rename it to 'Burger King Stadium'...

They're being demolished, not blown up, so it'll be a gradual process over the next week, not a five second explosion....

Ah, that makes more sense then, I'll have to check back in periodically in stead of waiting here for something to suddenly happen! Thanks!

This makes me proud to be a scotsman.
as a fitting relacement,
I suggest you build a giant statue of jim baxter sitting on the ball on the wembley pitch while the hapless english 'heroes'
of 66 try in vain to retrieve it from him......

Good riddance to the stinking shithole. The only pity is that they are rebuilding in the same place.
