This will probably be happening with EA's Sims Online soon as well. As a former player, I will tell you about how these games end up, it seems.

People get all excited, and can't wait to log in. Of course, EA has shipped the game 1/4 finished, so there are many things missing. So many, many people get frustrated and leave. Things get boring. Subscribers speak out against EA's incompetence and slow acting with regard to the features that should have been in the game in the first place. So this causes new subscribers to decrease, which causes EA to pull the game because they can't make any money on it. Which causes people to become upset at EA because they spent a lot of time building their homes, and now they will all vanish into nothingness.

I was in the beta test for Sims Online. Being a Maxis-made game, the interface was brilliant and the look was like candy. The company still manages to maintain that leopard-skin-lounge-tiki-bar groove that was so pervasive in the late 90s, and for some reason I'm a sucker for it.

But I was bored in less than a week, just as I was bored with The Sims offline. Why? Because the goal of almost every online game eventually becomes making more virtual money, and when I found myself coming home from work to stand around a virtual pizza oven in a virtual kitchen with three other human-manned Sims, it ceased to be worthwhile.
