Guru Vs. Blogger, Friday is Fight Night! A titanic battle of undefined criteria between high-paid (and over-hyped?) gurus and lowly bloggers. Who will win?

I think it's a battle between Gurus about Gurus and Gurus about Blogging. Basically an orgy of gurus, without the fun of the orgy.

Is the obvious comment that design gurus are too busy with work and speaking and uh, being gurus to design their personal website?

But a better comment would be that I don't consider Wurman, Norman, Nielsen, Merholz, Tog, Tufte, or McGovern visual designers. They work under the giant umbrella of "design" but that doesn't mean they make things pretty on the surface, they're designers in the classic sense: they're problem solvers.

It's easy to confuse the art of visual design with all things design-related, but it's a really broad term that people misuse all the time.

errrr...Zeldman isn't on the Guru team?

on preview, It's easy to confuse the art of visual design with all things design-related, but it's a really broad term that people misuse all the time. exactly.

is this a battle between Designs or their blogs?

The nitty gritty of web layout isn't the most intuitive thing in the world. Knowing what a nice layout is, and knowing how to put a nice layout on the the web, are two different things.

How thin, exactly, is the line between designers who blog and bloggers who design?

I'm not sure I see a point to this.

Isn't this just a little word wanking?

I think "guru" and "blog" are my two least favorite words in the entire Ebonics language.

wigu , maybe because guru blog and wigu have 4 letters and you're jealous :) ?

blog: just another four-letter word.

This seems like a rather biased, ego-stroking, circle-jerk to me...

But guys this is really important to the people who are involved

Oh, no it's not. They all have readerships and constituencies large enough that this is merely a fun exercise, and maybe a tweak of a hint that maybe they could present a slightly improved design face to the world.

As much as they may be flattered and/or shamed at being called out, I doubt any of them are losing sleep over it, one way or another.

What I see here is professional (or semi-pro, or whatever) geeks messing around, and it looks like they're having fun. Good on them. I wouldn't mind playing someday too, but I'm no guru, not even on the side.

I agree that Zeldman should be on the guru side, his legendary status far eclipses anything on the front page of his website... but doing so would ruin the preconceived outcome, so it can't be.

And criticizing Jakob Nielsen's style is just so old, and pointless since he's pointed out (repeatedly) that he's not a designer.
