Redemption

Redemption? At the risk of linking to another Something Awful thread and incurring their wrath, I think it's important to point this out, especially here. In the matter of a few short days, the users over there emptied their paypal accounts to help someone in need.
They raised $12,000 in four days.
And don't forget Penny Arcade's Child's Play which raised a shitload of cash (> $27 000) and games (more Game Cubes, PS2s and XBoxes I've ever seen) for the Seattle Children's Hospital. Gamer geeks aren't all bad.

Why wouldn't they? They're a community, just like Metafilter. They're probably even closer than MeFi. The 'net is filled with good people who just happen to enjoy linking to Tubgirl.
Good for them.

Well, at least this thread doesn't have a first post that says, "DO NOT LINK TO THIS THREAD. DO NOT POST THESE IMAGES ELSEWHERE." We're learning... Slowly.

Our last run-in with them left me with a feeling that they were all loons and idiots. When someone pointed this generous act out to me, I was surprised, and thought it was worthwhile to pass it on to anyone else who had written them off.

Yeah, good post, and good on all those loons and idiots.
I never thought about "emptying Paypal accounts" as a way of calling for donations, but I suspect a lot of use have some loose change tinkling around in there from various eBay auctions, etc. It's like a campaign to get everyone to get all the coins out of their sofas and donate it somewhere.

Our last run-in with them...
Damn, nobody invites me to the rumbles...and I spent all that time learning the dance moves and memorizing the lyrics.

Not at all. Many MeFites, myself included, like to drop in there once in a while. With a beer on a Friday night, is my favored mode of lurk. The comedy gold isn't as much in evidence as it once was over there, perhaps, and the average age is much younger than it is here, I reckon, but there's good stuff aplently there, and some interesting folks.
