Bootleg Objects, the site of two artists in Germany, have done some really amazing work retrofitting popular technology to serve a new and/or unintended purpose -- just because they can. It's quite beautiful design -- who knows of other examples?
The Mini ITX crowd is big on this sort of repurposing, with mixed results. Also a boombox retrofit in Wired a few months back. Also this via BoingBoing. Not necessarily as artisticly scoped or with quite as puffy an aesthetic, but...

That's a horrible unforgivable thing to do to a Technics table (talk about making a gimp out of a tank) but the B&O redo with the smartcard and mp3 capability is pretty damn sweet.

As a collector of vintage record players it's a conundrum for me whether to restore or refit but these guys do it oh so well. Very nice, thanks.
