I had this idea for a comedy where they'd breed customized genetic freaks to be foot-rests or hats or pets, because the phlegmy noises they'd make were cute. They'd cough and splutter through a month of existence before their body gives up and then they'd be replaced. The fuzzy bodies would pile up and people would keep coming up with creatures with better bone structures to be more comfortable foot-rests, or more furry so you don't have to see their gummy eyes looking up at you from under your feet.
I'm glad we're well on the way.

People, its a cat. It's not retarded, or an object of ridicule for the elite intelligensia of the web. It didn't find itself on this planet for your amusement. Its a cat.
It doesn't give a shit that its snark fodder on the Mefi (or Fark well before your lame asses). It doesn't care that an animal 10 times more intelligent than it will look at its picture and go "yuk, yuk, thats a stupid lookin critter, hu'yuk". Its ... a ... Cat. It will do cat things, and live a cat life. It will lick its butt, and play with string, and act like its being chased in a totally empty room.
And how have you shown your humanity here today? With the penultimate beevis-and-butthead threadwise roasting ... of a cat. (I've said it before and I'll say it again; sometimes Mefi really depresses me.)

Speaking of retarded cats, the greatest (/only) retarded cat I ever met lived at Twice Sold Tales in Fremont, Seattle. We were informed that the cat had fallen on its head whilst a kitten, and was in a state of permanent retardation. It sucked on its tail constantly and could not be kept away from your lap.
I often think of that cat fondly, and consider that this pretender, retarded or not, cannot hold a soppy wet tail to it. (Bookstore web page here, I'm not sure if the cat depicted is the same as I met so many years ago, or not. I would be most sad to hear that it had passed away, so please don't tell me it's not.)

Would I be offended if another animal took a picture of a human child, posted it on a website, and passed it along to all its animal friends for a laugh? I should hope so.
BTW, that video of the mother diapering her baby, only to have the child fart and shoot out a plume of powder from its rump is hysterical.

I'll take some teriyaki, some BBQ, and, uhm... some sashimi.
Wulfgar!, the only reasonable reason to own a cat is to be able to pester it. It's a well-known fact that the ancient Egyptians didn't actually worship cats, they merely created enormous monuments of cat-pestering for their cats.
And there's precious little else more amusing and life-affirming than a properly pestered cat.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a total runt of a tortoiseshell calico with a crooked tail to go pester. And I mean total runt. She's a perma-kitten weaselcat kinda cat. Brain the size of a walnut, googly eyes, etc. And she'll thank me for pestering her. :)
Oh, and this thread isn't even snarky, you humorless goiter-suckers, it's funny. (Ok, this paragraph is snarky, but not about cats.) It's just a picture of a goofy cat. And some goofy people making goofy comments. If this depresses you I can't imagine how you would manage to go grocery shopping, or, say, look out the window for more than 10 seconds.

Lighten up, you naysayers! This is *harmless* fun -- we don't honestly believe that the cat is retarded; we don't honestly believe that retarded people are inferior; we don't honestly believe that referring to this admittedly bizarre looking cat as "retarded" is an insult to either retarded people or to strange-looking cats.
It is merely an attempt to have good-natured fun with the *image* of the goofy-looking cat by comparing it people who happen to look a bit goofy, which does sometimes occur with people who have less-than-average intelligence.
Wait a minute. Did I just make this worse?

Metafilter is pretty tolerant of other viewpoints all-in-all and like I first said, it bugs me but that's just from the sum of my experiences. I think it may be futile to try and convey that to others. Maybe all objections to the word used as a pejorative will die out with this generation and it will just be a standard insult.

It's a shame that we always have words that are used this way, and that some actually describe people (or used to), but some aren't quite as bad as others. I'm sorry if it offends, but it offends much much less than some others (which i know is no defense).

I'll give you a specific example of what I see as the problem with it, I tuned in to the show "in living color" a few years ago and they had a character called "retard man" who was a particularly ugly caricature of a retarded superhero. I thought it was ugly then, and I think made acceptable to some by the prevalence of the word as an insult. I think madTV had something similar and I just find it really hard to defend as comedy.
Words like faggot, queer and nigger (or even nerd and geek) can be somewhat reclaimed by their targets, but this is harder for the people who generally get called retards so maybe that's what I see as part of the problem.

I used to help out this downs guy who would play that game Barbarian (two players fighting game with swords and decapitation). I'd call him a retard when he's lose. He'd call me a worker ant because I had to work for a living (unlike this retard, who was apparently living it large).

But it's incredibly incredibly hard to reclaim hurtful words, and as "faggot" shows, not at all successful. It's ok for me--a faggot--to call another guy one, but it's not ok for kids to, or for strangers to, etc. So the word is really not at all reclaimed, unless it's not used disparagingly anymore by anyone. I think it's actually a blessing that people with mental disabilities don't even know about "retard", or if they know, aren't as bothered by it as a black man being called "nigger" or me being called a "faggot".
I wish people would only use the words that are made up or more removed (freak, dweeb, geek, etc).

Dude, there's no trolling involved here. Animals can be goofy looking at times. So what? They're animals. They don't care, and we're the worse for posting it to the front as if its of any damn import to the web, the world or us. We might as well post:

The cat is a monument to inbreeding, but I havec to say that that is one craptastic web site. Are there any bases that they didn't cover? Midi music playing; fugly background; animated gifs; half assed navigation; crashed Mozilla. Oh, I guess they could have used frames. *shrug* But those cats are going to have some kind of physical deficiencies, I'm betting.

ain't cat breeding great?
going to have some kind of physical deficiencies, I'm betting
seriously. breeding is out of hand when so many variety of cat and dog result in animals that are guaranteed to have some sort of defect that will shorten their lives, or at the very least be a discomfort their entire lives. this kind of cat with the face bred to be pushed in will definitely have sinus, dental, and respiratory issues it's entire life, possibly leading to facial cancer or brain tumors. manx cats often end up with spina bifida, maine coone cats are almost all born with hyper trophic cardiomyopathy, german shepherds often have hip dysplasia and epilepsy. all for profit and amusement of the animal that's apparently "10 times smarter".
----
i worked with a large group of down syndrome kids all thru' high school, tutoring them and taking them on trips to the theatre, zoo, etc. and whenever one of us (kids or tutors) would make a mistake or do something silly, invariably one of them would ask "what are you, retarded?!" and they'd all bust up laughing.

I had a retarded cat once.. Poor guy took a four storey fall onto granite when he was a kitten. Grew up to be one of the sweetest cats ever, even if he did used to drool and run headlong into walls.

Wulfgar, this thread, which initially seemed to be a one-trick pony (good for one or two laughs), actually has some interesting commentaries about the power of words, an idea that I'm sure appeals to you. So stop complaining about it. If you really don't like the thread just move on, no need to get angry because it exists. This is exactly what bothers me about Seth and the anti-politics crowd. They just can't seem to move on to the next link...

#1: Show of hands... who cringed upon reading the FPP, knowing that there would be a long, drawn-out discussion on the propriety of using the word "retarded"? Hey, I agree with the lib'rals on this one, it's a bad word that shouldn't be used, in any context. But we've had this discussion before.
#2: Wulfgar!--it's a cat. A cat that was intentionally bred to look ridiculous. It's OK to make fun of a cat that was intentionally bred to look ridiculous. In fact, it'd be rude not to, to not show appreciation for the work and effort and multiple generations of breeding that went into producing that very effect.
Plus, it's a cat. C'mon.

I leave this thread for 18 hours after posting three cat-oriented puns, and come back to find a heated discussion about using insensitive terms for disabled people to refer to odd-looking animals. You people need to stop drinking bottled water and start suckin' up the Prozac out of the tap!
I was more than a little uncomfortable about the use of "retarded" to describe a cat that just looks very very weird, but I just avoided it in my previous comments. I promise the next time somebody discovers a new species in the lowest depths of the ocean, I will personally do a front-page post linking to it's picture for everybody to laugh at (becasue you KNOW it's gonna look strange). But I absolutely will not use language like "retarded". I'll save that for commentary about the President. (JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!)
And, grateful, I'm suspicious of the unretouched quality of those pictures myself. But who needs Photoshop? That cat looked like an example for good old Kai's Power Goo!

(1) The kitten is looking pretty decidedly retarded, your After School Special rubber-glue-bouncing riposte bedamned.
(2) We don't care that the kitten doesn't care. You seem to think we're all having a good time here because we're feeling tough and cool for having shown that retarded kitty just what we think of it. I don't know why you think that. I think that's really weird.

You know, my critiques here started as rather tongue-in-cheek, but this just begs a response:
We don't care that the kitten doesn't care.
Well aren't you tough and cool! (moron.)
You seem to think we're all having a good time here because we're feeling tough and cool for having shown that retarded kitty just what we think of it.
No, I think you've wasted time and Metafilter to prove that a) you're about as sharp as a cartoon character, and b) you've proven that the farkification of MeFi is now complete. Furthermore, you've proven to other members of the supposedly sentient species that you have the whit to battle a picture of a cat. Good job. Good job, I say!
I don't know why you think that. I think that's really weird.
That you don't get it is my point, exactly. Empathy goes a long way in this world. Try it some time. It feels really good. But be careful ... You might even enjoy it.
p.s. I didn't take myself so seriously, why did you?

See, this is the thing that is weirding me out. Who's battling the cat picture? Where's the conflict? You just seemed to be reacting, there, to something that wasn't extant. You're projecting some sort of heated anti-this-kitten confrontation onto a passive no-brainer thread.
The farkification of Metafilter started with Catscan. I'd say that since Matt hasn't yet created a BOOBIES tag for posts, we're still doing okay in the compromise.
And I'm not taking myself THAT seriously. I was taking your apparent outrage seriously, sure, but that was what I was reacting to in the first place.

Jesus, wulfgar, you got some sort of weird kitten-attachment disorder? Why all this defense of an ugly kitten and not, say, defense of the sofa-embedded woman? How come the kitten demands your attention and skillful outrage, and George W. does not? Getta grip already, man!

As for defending a kitten, yeah I'll do that ... even a fugly one. It's just a cat. It didn't choose to be born ugly or otherwise, and its never gonna know the difference. I meant what I said in my first comment. I hope it has a great kitty life. What's the problem with that? Is liking living things a disorder now? Sheesh, man. Get a grip already. ;-)

The disorder is the amount of fuss you're making over people's silliness about the cat. People make unfair and disparaging comments about other people, like ol' retarded monkeyboy Bush, and you let it slide.
But whatever. You just make sure you're having fun with it all.
