The Evolution of the Horse is a theory not a fact. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered.

MrMustard: It's funny you posted about horse evolution. Just last week, I was helping my 10-year-old daughter find resources for a paper on mesohippus, and I was amazed to discover that horse evolution is one of the targets of the anti-evolution crowd. I posted to my blog about this discovery (self-link, obviously).

So the private ranchers that get to use the public land for free want the horses slaughtered because letting them live reduces the rancher's profits from grazing cattle on the public land. For free.
brilliant summation enron hubbard.
And George W. is expected to sign the bill. I would like to see him explain this to the kids that were reading "My Pet Goat".
i would sponsor a bill to slaughter these wyld stallyns. and i wouldn't even feel bad about it.
If sending American soldiers to be slaughtered unnecessarily doesn't bother some folks in Washington, why would you think they would care about slaughtering a few thousand horses to increase profits?
dude, these are WILD HORSES, not volunteer soldiers.

That's a terribly sad story. Wild horses are a really special thing, rather magical, in some ways.
I've always been fascinated by the wild horse population on Sable Island in Nova Scotia. They're totally unmanaged and thus are about as close to "wild" as a horse can get.

Wild Horse Monument
Kind of an eerie reminder that there was once more than tumbleweeds traveling across the NW plains.

Or these wild horses of the Chilcotin. It's an emotional issue for sure, but these are an introduced species and cute or not I feel a lot worse about endangered endemic species.

Enron, private ranchers pay yearly fees to graze animals
on public lands. It is not "for free". Some conservation
groups buy up these leases to prevent cow grazing.
Citing range deterioration and depletion as a reason for
slaughter or removal of 37,000 animals in the face of the
damage done by millions of cattle seems disingenuous to me.
Seems more like pork than horsemeat to me.

Hmmm. Thanks for the clarification. But if that's the case, what was Karen Sussman talking about when she stated "public lands ranching is the biggest welfare subsidy the public pays for"?
(That's what I get for RingTFA.)

When did ranchers, the stereotype of self reliance, become a bunch of whiny freeloaders?
Damn, I'm barely awake and I'm already pissed off.

I would guess it means that the ranching is partially subsidized, but not wholly subsidized. We're still paying for it, but the ranchers chip in too.

AFAI understand, the ranchers do pay a fee, but said fee is far below the market rate - what it would cost to "keep" the land as a private entity.

You're dangerous 'cause you're honest
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey
You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left in a beach
Well you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee
Well you stole it 'cause I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cause I wanted revenge
Well you lied to me 'cause I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee
Oh, the deeper I spin
Oh, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heavens white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, your gypsy heart
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, and don't look back
Come on now love, don't you look back
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses
Who's gonna take the place of me
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna tame the heart of thee
