Driving down the street in my Panzer tank,
sittin’ drinkin’ Cris’ with my bitch Anne Frank.
And when I step into the club’s you know I’m steppin with style!
Raise my left hand, party people say “Heil!”

it'd be more offensive if it weren't so dumb.

one thing i worry about is a cartoonization of hitler, where eventually humor and some strange caricature of personality and fascism replace historical reality and the holocaust and perils of empire and eugenics are washed over with parady.

i'm afraid it's already begun.

Is anybody going to mention there might be antisemitism involved here somewhere?

And what's this about raising the LEFT hand? Ain't they seen no newsreels on Hitler? "No, yer OTHER left!"

Of course that will happen. Is there any question? It's a natural and normal part of history. How much depth could you give me about the Albigensian crusade? I could pick a half dozen other examples. Today, Genghis Khan is often used for comedic purposes (see Bill and Ted). Yet the Mongols are responsible for, relative to the populations, more widespread death and destruction than Hitler could ever dream of.

It's all perfectly natural.

Not sure what's more insidious, the cartoonization of Hitler, or our society's strip-mining of "white people rapping like black people is funny" gags.

Why is "white people rapping like black people is funny" insidious or even mildly disturbing?

I thought it was funny.

the perils of empire and eugenics are washed over with parady

You know, back in the 1920s when Fascism and Nazism were ascendent, people talked about them, in the early days, as a return to or a reincarnation of "Bonapartism". Back then culture still remembered Napoleon as an authoritarian thug - now he's a funny short guy in a weird pointy hat lampooned by the likes of Bill and Ted. So it goes.

Yeah, it started at least as far back as 1970 with the (really funny) "North Minehead Bye-election" sketch fom Flying Circus. Get a grip. Seriously. You need to get a grip.
