No Hubba Hubba

No Hubba Hubba and with this in the campaign too ... Is the New Zealand government trying to be "too down" with the "kids" bro?
Or do they have it just right ? Morningside 4 Life!
Nope, it's a serious set of TV commercials.
I'm undoubtedly too old and probably too European to be in the ads' and Brotown's target audience, but I can't stand either of them. I was disappointed that they received more funding and decided to keep screening the ads because I can't see them having much impact, if any.

And because the general reaction of teenagers here is "hubba wha?"
It's hardly a phrase that had much use before these ridiculous ads came along. I'm with tracicle, no impact.

Have you heard the news? There's this hot new craze called hip hopTM, and all the kids middle-aged ad execs love it!

Reminds me of the "Tobacco is whacko if you're a teen" commercials from a couple years ago. Aside from the fact that whoever wrote that slogan is quite out of touch with the "hip lingo" teens are using these days, it implies that if you're not a teen, tobacco is not "whacko".

"hubba hubba", at least here in america is not a word that means sex, it's more like "I find that person attractive".

Serously, people in my office, in their 30s and 40s talk about "bling" in interface design. No other hip-hop word has taken off like that.
---
On the other hand, with the animation like that, it's the kind of imaging you'd see associated with childrens advertizing in the US, not something for teenagers or young adults. Which is slightly creepy. It seems like teenagers would be more turned off by this kind of thing, but then, almost all 'preachy' marketing twoards teens is distastefull to their demographic.
---
But ultimately the ads are certanly memorable (especialy the gay one) and that's all that really matters.

Of course, because the ads were paid for by tobaco companies. Making rediculously dorky 'anti-smoking' ads probably made them more money then otherwise.

Apparently it won an award. While 'hubba hubba' is a fairly non-kiwi, non-used colloquialism, the rate of understanding of the message of the ad was extremely high in pre-release focus groups and so they decided to go with it - it's now in its second run. Polynesian youth in New Zealand, especially, tend to respond well to anything they perceive as American, like hip-hop.
On the dissenting side, investigate claims that the ads perpetuate a discredited myth that codoms work against STDs. And the Destiny church says (*surprise*) that abstinence is the only answer.
