Stupid Is As Stupid Wins

Stupidest. Awards. Show. Ever. The results are in for the 2005 World Stupidity Awards, hosted by Daily Show Guy Lewis Black and presented as part of the Just-for-Laughs Comedy Festival, and Host Country Canada was the upset winner of "Dumbest Government", beating out the U.S., Iran, North Korea and the whole damn United Nations. All the nominees are here, but don't bother voting, because the awards have been awarded, and that would be stupid.
can I just say -- I find Lewis Black funny not at all, and unfunny in that painfully trying-too-hard way.

Having the Gomery commission as a reason to award this makes no sense... first, because only people in this province give a sh*t about it, and we're right smack in the middle of vacation season (literally, it started last weekend and it ends next weekend). So the people who will be at the show are most likely to be mostly American tourists, who probably don't even know for sure that "Canada" isn't an American city, and people from other parts of Canada who have no idea what the commission is about.
This is starting to look just as well thought by the Comedy Fest's planning committee as Thursday's fake bomb alert. No seriously, the Festival's chief organizer felt it would be a good larf to have a fake bomb alert during one of the indoor shows on Thursday. That's the sort of massive brain power the festival is dealing with...

I don't think I've heard the word "poppycock" before, and I just had to comment how much I liked it.

Poppycock.
And Poppycock, from the same people who make Fiddle Faddle.
And clevershark, they did give THEMSELVES the award for the "Stupidest Award Show", over the Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes and Daytime Emmys.

The award had to have something to do with hosting it in Montreal. I can think of a number of issues that the Canadian government has fumbled miserably but the Gomery enquiry is not really the clincher. It looks like they selected Canada to cater to the Quebecois humour. After all, French-Canadians were probably the highest in attendance at the awards show.

"Hotel heiress Paris Hilton won in two categories. She was named Stupidist Woman of the Year" - [emphasis added] - hmmm, seems stupidity is contagious.

Wow, it was decided from Internet voting so the Canadian upset is that much more astonishing.

Well, how many MeFites knew about the voting beforehand? (I learned about it 8 hours after the ceremony)

Clevershark, you might not realize that the Gomery inquiry is playing out west as yet another reason why the Liberals are always wrong, always bad, always dangerous, all the time, no exception no discussion. As if losing 200,000 jobs in 1980 to Trudeau's National Energy Program idiocy wasn't bad enough....

watsondog: This is no time to engage in negativity. Let's just rejoice in our victory, no matter how much against our nature that is.

I like it when someone in California knows things about the city I live in that I don't know.
Things I don't want to know either because the 'Juste pour rire' festival isn't exactly my cup of tea. And I feel sorry for the people who live in the housing project downtown near where the festival takes place during two weeks, every night until late.

What the hell is the "Gomery inquery" all about? What does it have to do with being 'stupid'? It all seems very archane to me.

Delmoi asked:
What the hell is the "Gomery inquery" all about?
Nothing too shocking. malfeasance, corruption, dishonesty and some of my tax dollars pissed down a hole. If you really want to know, here's a link to the "official" website: http://www.gomery.ca/en/index.asp

So what's the acronym suggesting?
Main Organization Revealing Obvious Nitwits Inc.
Hmmmm. Of course EBay's Google ad offers plenty:
Moroni
Huge selection of
Moroni items.

The scope of Western alienation amazes me. I moved to Edmonton from Ontario for a couple of years and was advised several times while I was there not to mention where I was from.

To paraphrase Triumph the Insult Dog:
"Making fun of "Just for Laughs" is like booing at the Special Olympics." Same goes for the Canadian government.
