Eww. Tunnel of love?

So you're a hippo expert are you? You've seen the excellent hippo flash and hippo fight video at pbs. You're bored by the surprisingly tame hippo courtship video. You may even know that cannibalism may be responsbile for anthrax in hippos. But did you know about the species of leech that breeds exclusively in their rectum? Yeah, I thought not. More here on page 28 [pdf].
What an excellent post! Rectum leeches are my new favorite topics of conversation. Thanks, hindmost!!!!!

"inside the warm, airless reaches of the hippo's rectum are leeches looking for love."
I think I know what my NaNoWriMo novel is going to be about this year.

The opportunity to inspect incidental life in the rectum of a hippo should influence many a student to major in science.

One of those links is subscriber-only, probably not the best for a FPP link. Other than that, fun stuff, thanks much!

This is a great post, and well put together; it's much better than a lot of the other tail-spinning, shit-flinging posts around here. Thanks.

How appropriate that a post about ass leeches should come from hindmost. Bravo!

And lets not forget the previously meta-mentioned hippos in South America, gratia Pablo Escobar. Different link than previously mentioned in the past, now the Columbian government is out to profit on their new found water mammals.

Good stuff. Can't find it online at the moment, but there was an article in the July 25th New Yorker by John Colapinto on this very topic, hippo ass dwellers and all.
