Today is the 40th anniversary an uprising that led to the massacre of 1,000s of Indonesians and the installation of Suharto as president of Indonesia. I'm wondering if there's any significance...

...I'm also wondering if this is the most badly constructed post in the history of Metafilter.

I just surfed all the TV channels and there's nothing, what's with that?
Jeez, I'm wondering if news.google.com or news.bbc.co.uk might have something? Oh wow! They have! Nevermind, the link to Weeniefilter is far superior...

The Jesse Helms Why?

Hmmmm. Let's see:

Seriously tellurian, a couple of minutes to compose yourself and a halfway decent attempt at a post might help us all.

On reflection.. okay, knee jerk reaction from me... Matt please delete if you see fit. I love Indonesia and their people and I hate that this has happened again. Weeniefilter not withstanding, I was suprised to not see a TV programme interruption [not US newsfilter].
Can we back on topic?

you could have also put the word Bali in there somewhere, no?

The tourist industry there is screwed.

Calm down people. The thread is not the place for discussing the thread.

(I mean calm down about the FPP quality, not the bombings, of course)

It is nearly 5 o'clock in the morning here in Australia and so I am out of sync with America. I'm sorry for the weak post but I'm shocked and hurting for the people that have been harmed and killed by the bombings.

I love Bali, it's a magical place. Beritanya membuat saya sedih (that news makes me sad).

Between this and avian flu, which is popping up all over Indonesia, I'd say it's not a good bet. But if you want a cheap hotel room, book now!

Well this happened last night at 8pm local Bali time (GMT 8+ which is 2hrs behind Sydney time, and 1hr 30mins behind my time, GMT 9.5+ Adelaide) I turned on Foxtel Digital Satellite to watch SkyNews at about 5 am this morning and was shocked to see the breaking news banner down the bottom and that Bali had been hit again. I flicked around the other channels and 1hr later and there was nothing on FoxNews, CNN or BBC World. But it was reported on these stations at 8am this morning. Which was about 6pm US/CAD Eastern Standard Time (GMT 5-) which sounds like the normal time you would report the news after people get home from work.

Anyway what I know is: 36 people dead (who knows really at this stage how many) 100 Injured. Many of the dead and injured are definately Indonesians. I know that 1 Australian is confirmed dead, 17 injured. I don't know if Brits , Americans or any other Westerners are dead but I think I heard 2 Americans are injured and 1 Brit injured.
Indonesian Police, AFP (Australian Federal Police) and FBI are already at the scene. I saw some AFP in camera shots of not long after it all happened. I believe some are stationed in Bali or at least were already there. Since the Indonesian Military aren't too forthcoming with their intelligence. I heard that the AFP were helping them out. Our AFP work with them alot on terrorism and drug busts since Bali is a transit point for Ephedrine coming into Australia to be made into speed over here.

Some FoxNews Anchor called Jemaah Islamiya (The people they think are responsible for this) the Indonesian Arm Of Al-Qaeda. That sounds like a bit of crap to me as Jemaah Islamiya's goal is to mainly cause a lot of shit to the Indonesian Government as they want to create a big Islamic Caliphate in South East Asia that would include as far as Manila and Northern Australia. Not just to kill infidels.
Clearly bombing Bali causes a big impact to Bali's economy as it mostly comes from tourism. I don't see how this relates to what Al-Qaeda is about other than killing innocent civillians of any race and religion.

To those who hate Muslims. You have to ask yourself. If all Muslims are potential terrorists then why would they blow up potential "suicide bombers"? People who operate organised highly sophisticated cells which all the technology and intelligence in the world can't often prevent. Why would they blow up their own if "all Muslims are terrorists" and it means killing potential recruits? I guess the answer would be that the majority of Muslims are as innocent as anyone else killed in these blasts and all the ones before that including September 11, the 2003 Bali bombing, Madrid, London, the list is very long.

D-503, I don't know what you're talking about with your reference to killing Muslims - Bali isn't Muslim, it's predominantly Hindu, pretty much unique amongst the Indonesian islands.

I was in one today's blast sites last year (the one in Matahari), possibly one of the others (one of the beach restaurants).

I'm apalled, and shocked, and horrified, but I'm not surprised. It's such an easy target for those blood thirsty bastards. They're all going to hell.

The Monkey,

My point was that in alot of terrorist attacks. Muslims are being killed too. I did say most of the people killed and injured were Indonesians I didn't say they were Muslims.

As many here at MeFi can tell you, this is undoubtedly Eric Rudolph's work. Although some racists will try to write it off as the work of Jemaah Islamiyah. Don't believe them.

From Newsday:
"Since the 2002 attacks, Jemaah Islamiyah has been tied to at least two other bombings in Indonesia, both in Jakarta. Those blasts, one outside the Australian Embassy in 2004 and the other at the J.W. Marriott hotel in 2003, killed at least 23.

The group's alleged spiritual leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, who has been jailed for conspiracy in the 2002 attacks, through a spokesman denied any personal connection to the weekend explosions. There was no statement from the group, which wants to establish an Islamic state across Southeast Asia.

Bashir is known for strong anti-Western and anti-Semitic views but has always maintained his innocence. Fauzan Al Anshari, his spokesman, said the cleric had no involvement in Saturday's explosions.

"No Muslim would carry out those bombings," he said.

"We will hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice," he said, said the president, who was scheduled to fly to Bali later Sunday to look at the devastation first hand.

Joke's on him — Rudolph's already in jail! The rest of his well-organized, well-funded global network of Xtian bombers responsible for this remain at large, though, and must be reined in.

They're not at large. They're in the US Air Force.

God, the racist media.

Looks like they're still trying to pin this on Al Qaeda. You saw the "Power of Nightmares", right? Al-Qaeda doesn't even exist!

I hope Rudolph & his Xtian army fry for this.
