Year-End Letters to the Editor
December 31, 2005 10:06 AM Subscribe
Many letters to the editor are unfit to print, but that didn't stop one of my local papers from saving them up and printing the most entertaining today. Among the gems are complaints about ugly feet and phallic WalMart trash cans, as well as the astute observation that the "Frenchies" own a lot of foreign cars. Registration may be required. I took the liberty of creating a metafilter/metafilter account.
Did someone declare today to be RegistrationRequiredFilter day?

Half a tree, philosophically, must ipso facto half not be.

Har har. Some crazy people out there. From the phallic-shaped trash letter: What is next? Doors which resemble vaginas? Anus-shaped windows? I kinda like Anus Shaped Window for a username.

Oh yeah. Who cares about Katrina? Doesn't effect li'l ol' provincial me. (Double points off if the letter writer, decrying criticism of Bush, strongly supports the war in Iraq.)

Well, maybe the writer's engaging in dry wit. Well, probably is. Never mind! (Were there other letters decrying the coverage earlier? Guess you'd have to read the paper all the time to understand.)

A great deal more stuff in a similar mocking vein can be found at:

So what's the footnote to "Œsexualizing"? Does it appear in the print version? I'm looking at the OED and I don't see why anyone would write that.
Also, the letter to God was amusing, but its grammar and lack of style hurt my head.

Some of those letters were crazy brilliant. I'm not sure what point the majestic pines letter writer was making, but I applaud the letter nonethleless.

They always mess up the encoding for punctuation in their online edition. The Œ is supposed to be one of those fancy front-side single quote marks ( ‘ ) and the ¹ should be the fancy back-side single quote mark ( ’ ).
I've never once seen them get that right.
