The cartoon book that started it all is ten years old. This is an animated update to that story, and a pretty damn funny one.

This is starting from when the first Homestar Runner was drawn in a mock children's book by the Brothers Chaps-- it was several years before the first flash cartoon was created and put on the web.

Awesome. All of you buy the t-shirts! This kind of entertainment deserves support.

Soul claps!
More T-shirts!

I met the Brothers Chaps a few years back at a college lecture. They were kewl and I am so happy they are still able to make a living off their own creative ideas with 0% Studio Control!!!

That's ten years too long.

yeah, watching that (half of) reminded me why i don't check that site much anymore. i don't mean to snark, i just really have had my fill.

I used to be really, really into Homestar Runner, bought loads of merch, watched everything they put out, and then one day I just stopped finding it entertaining.

I'm not saying that it's intrinsically unfunny or anything, and the creators are to be commended (bitterly envied, really) for the manner and extent of their success, but I guess I had a finite appetite for it.

Zozo summarizes my feelings exactly, except to mention that I still have a fondness for some of the older jokes, and once every six months or so go back there and look around, but it just doesn't captivate the way it once did. There just might be an upper limit to how much Homestar one can be amused by.

I very rarely go to HR on my own, but whenever it gets linked somewhere, I'm compelled to play pop tire for at least 20 minutes or so. And yet my high score is still an incredibly sucky 161.

CHEERLEADER! WHAT'S HER FACE! SO AND SO! THE UGLY ONE!

(sorry... Teen Girl Squad just about kills me every time I watch it, especially when they form the band... my bass feels seaworthy!)

So...is Homestar FUNNY funny, or just internet cult funny?
posted by craniac at 7:40 PM on August 22, 2006

Craniac: Well actually Strongbad is funny funny. Homestar is stupid funny. The Cheat is meh funny. Strongsad is annoyingly funny. The Kind of Town is grossly funny...

but there are way too many in jokes for you just start watching it without going thru the highly structured program schedule listed here:

It has its ups and downs but overall their run has been impressive.
posted by drezdn at 9:20 PM on August 22, 2006

Teen Girl Squad is consistently funny. Everything else requires the patience of a zen monk for barely a chuckle.

OK, some of the SB emails are also pretty funny. And anything made by The Cheat.

Good on them.
I've been enjoying the site for a while (though I sort of gorged myself one vacation, and laid off a bit after that). There's an astonishing amount of good stuff in their catalog.

It's not for everyone, though.
For instance, advertisers.

Burnination, baby!
