Gay Gamers! A videogame site for the rest of us. Don't miss the top 20 gayest videogame characters of all time. (Though cross-dressing, hot tubbing-with-all-the-boys Cloud from FF7 should be in there somewhere, I'm thinking).Possibly NSFW in a pixel-y sort of way.

This is what the rest of us were craving?

I must be out of touch with my inner pissant.

I'll stick with my Katamari, thanks.

Ramza from FFT was pretty gay too. He's wearing buttless chaps in the final chapter...

Blaze, King of all Cosmos is HAWT don't you think?

What about Vega from Street Fighter?

In the first one, the King did set my heart all aflutter and such, but it's too bad Namco had a little, erm.. "surgery" done to prep him for the family-friendly sequel. "DISCO" Dipp is my favorite cousin.

This List seemed to lack a lot of honest-to-goodness-gayness.

I mean as sophomoric an endeavor as it may be to crit a list of gayest video-game characters; they neglected more than a few entries from games/developers that actually dared to include genuine openly gay characters. (in favor of those characters who "wore pink one time/acted femme/appeared foppish")

I for one want an inquest into gay members of board-games, I've many suspicions about CandyLand

Sciurus. Buttless Chaps are for Everyone.
Everyone who is proud of their butt.

Could they find 20 that way? I ask seriously. Sexuality in videogames is rarely treated in any fashion other than sophomoric. Though I have always entertained amusing thoughts at how many guys underwent some serious thinking when they realized Samus was a WOMAN baby!

Well, I'm honestly surprised they left out the whole range of gay Sims mods. There's more to video games than just consoles.

I always thought Birdo and Yoshi must have some great 69 sex. She's got that huge sucking maw and he's got that long tongue...

I'm sad that they missed Final Fantasy V's Faris Scherwiz (link has game spoilers! oh no).
However, I quickly forgot about my sadness when I got to number seven.

This is why metafilter is an essential part of my work day.

I would say yes. My friends in college kept a lists of openly gay comic characters, and both lists had well over twenty entrants. The problem is almost all of them come from RPGs, which may contain a hundred or more NPCs each; or classic PC adventure games, which not many people (sadly) ever played. But I would say you could easily make said list with resorting to characters that seemed gay.

In counterpoint the King of all Cosmos is Wicked HAWT

I'm pretty sure most leads from most FF games are gay as a parade.

Naturally, this list leaves off the most obviously gay of all Street Fighter characters: Ryu. He and Ken were a couple when they were teenagers, you know.

I have a vague memory of there being a gay subplot in Ultima 7 (or Ultima 7 part 2), but I can't say for sure. Does anyone else remember?

I am comfortable enough with my sexuality to admit that I want to play Tingle's new game.

Crassius Curio of Morrowind was fairly out of the closet. I heard that one of the main game quests require male PC's to drop trou for him. (I can't confirm this, as I abandoned the main quest completely around hour 60).

Ok...I admit that I've never played any games. But this made me bust out laughing.

So where would a newbie start. Are these free downloads. Anything of particular interest to folks of the lesbian persuasion.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, no joke. Feels like it was written by straight guys so bad at determining what's gay that, once they started thinking about it, EVERYTHING was.

Some of these are really obvious, and others are the product of a bunch of bored nerds sitting around trying to imagine a gay identity for whatever character pops into their head. Zangief? Come on.

I was hoping for something oriented more toward the social aspects of gay gaming: the finer points of ignoring/annoying homophobic 12 year olds, or what to do when members of your guild/group/team/whatever say something stupid and homophobic, though they are otherwise tolerable people.

I play PvP (player vs. player) MMOs and the competitive, hyper-masculine, immature environment does get a bit tiresome. I imagine that there are many people who deal with the same issues and it would be interesting to hear their perspectives.

They forgot every single character in Squaresoft's "Vagrant Story". For example, the villan was a shirtless blonde pretty-boy in a long skirt, and the hero, Ashley Riot, wears assless leather chaps.

The King of All Cosmos is just metro.

hermitosis: Would you have been happier if this had been a list of the 20 campiest videogame characters?

What, no Voldo?
posted by krix at 3:46 PM on August 28, 2006

Voldy's an honorable mention, krix, losing out to Raphael for the Soul Calibur Ghey Award.

Personally, I think they made a mistake. Voldy's got the MOVES baby. He's sooooo slinky!
posted by WolfDaddy at 4:34 PM on August 28, 2006

Also, there are about a million sports games (to say nothing of history sims and whatnot) that feature videogame versions of real human beings. Surely one of them is gay, and I think that lists like this would be better for including 'em.
posted by box at 4:54 PM on August 28, 2006

Also, they definitely made a mistake with Raphael over Voldo. And didn't I see Sophitia on one of these lists? The Soul Calibur Ghey Award has some fierce competition.

"Not all gay guys are femmy, limp-wristed sprites, darting about with their long flowy hair wisping about their girly faces."

How generous of them to say that.
