La Pietà - In 1998, photographer Gregor Podgorski [translation] staged 500 different versions of the work of art made famous by Michelangelo. Ninety-six are available online, including such highlights as Anatomical Pietà, Librarian Pietà, Pietà In Hell, and, of course, Smurf Pietà. Most links NSFW.

No, really. This is kind of neat, but I've always wondered what sort of artistic statement is made by DOING IT BIGGER. So there are 500. Why 500? And why is 500 more compelling than doing 2? Or 1?

Probably because he's French and the French do stuff like that. And its cool enough for some French, post-modernist philosopher or critic to take seriously.

For whatever it's worth, I think he did 500 because it was the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo's sculpture.
