The tigers are very cool. But WTF, Russia?

”Condoleezza Rice needs a company of soldiers. She needs to be taken to barracks where she would be satisfied. On the other hand, she can hardly be satisfied because of her age."

Not a fan of Ms. Rice, but what a thing to say about older, unmarried women who say unpopular stuff. Dude needs to be fed to underwater tigers.

Man those tigers look like real killers. Usually photographs of tigers make them look like overgrown puddy tats, with big "Who me?" eyes peeking out of Rousseau painting forest greenery. But these snarlers are scary. brrrr. Their bloodthirsty determination, snaggletoothiness is so out there. Marvelously fierce! Now those are tigers.
posted by nickyskye at 9:55 PM on May 14, 2007

I keep imagining that trainer at the moment the tigers emerge from the drink...."Hahaha.... God help me, I am SOOOO sorry. Please, it was the photographer's idea. He's the bad man, the bad tasty plump man... Nice kitties, nice...."

Kinda funny, nicky, coz those languid free-range tigers can probably rip the photographer's heart out, meanwhile these fiercely poised Bengals are doing circus tricks at Six Flags Vallejo. Rousseau would approve.

I wonder why they look so angry.

I think they look so fierce because their muzzles are all wrinkled and scrunched up in order to seal their nostrils against the water. Notice that you can't see their ears in any of those photographs. I'm betting they can seal those down against the water too. Also, they could be opening their jaws that wide so that the sudden inflow of water will carry the piece of meat in.

Makes me think hunting in water is part of their built-in repertoire.

gsteff : "I wonder why they look so angry."

This is a completely unsubstantiated guess, but could they be snarling as a way to close off their nostrils?

I always did like tigers, and while I knew they swam, I'd never seen any pictures of them underwater before (swimming on the surface, yes, underwater, no).

Tigers clearly love baby flesh. Probably because of the marbling with streaks of fat and veal like upbringing. So soft and delicious.

When I lived in DC, I used to go to the National Zoo on a fairly regular basis. When it was hot, the tigers were nearly always in their moat, playing with their pool toy (an empty beer keg).

Sometimes, my (non-tiger) cat likes to climb into the shower with me. He'll sit at my feet and get completely soaked.

Cats are odd.

rtha I never had a cat who liked to be in the shower, but I had one who liked to sit on the edge of the bathtub sometimes. At least, she did until one day she fell in. Somehow she was out so fast that I swear only her paws were wet...

I did have a cat once who always waited beside the shower whenever anyone was taking one. This cat thought that the best thing in the universe was to bite people's calves after they got out of the shower. Not hard, she didn't want to hurt you apparently. And only after a shower, she never bit anyone any other time.

I used to know a cat who would sit outside the shower while someone was in it; he'd scream and holler and meow. We imagined he was yelling "Are you ok? Oh my god! You're covered with that horrible wet stuff! Get out! Hurry!"

Apparently, tigers don't think this.
posted by rtha at 8:38 AM on May 15, 2007

I had a cat who would hide behind the nearby window curtain whenever you took a shower. Of course, her little paws poked out the bottom; she wasn't real good at hiding. If you pretended not to see her when you got out, she would run up and swat you (claws retracted) as soon as you turned your back. Then, if you meowed at her, she would meow back urgently. All this, only post-shower.

I don't know what this all meant, but I guarantee it would have been bloodier if she were a tiger.

From what I understand, Tigers enjoy the water, and are quite good swimmers.

Bengal tigers are known to spend the heat of the day in pools or streams, waiting for things to cool down before heading out for dinner (i.e. a goat or you or me).

Some housecats are also OK being more or less wet. I had a Maine Coon that had no trouble being out at night in a typical Seattle 38 degree rain.

He actually seemed to enjoy it.
