Where Are They Now? The Hanson Brothers. Reliving the goon old days with the Hanson Brothers from Slap Shot (and the 2002 sequel).
The Hanson Brothers were the REAL stars of the movie to this then-14 year old kid and his buddies. At that age, we didn't care a whole lot about Paul Newman's character's troubles with the ladies, or the failing business, etc. But the Hanson Brothers -- now THAT we understood.

Ah, the fabulously anarchic Slapshot. The only real downside of this post is that it reminds me of the Hudson Brothers. Pee-yew.

I'll maybe get some flak for saying this, but the stuff the musical Hanson Brothers have been producing lately has actually sounded not that bad.

I'm with FelliniBlank. I had to dig into the post to realize it was the Slapshot guys and not the 70s-TV-summer-replacement-variety-show-and-one-of-the-dudes-fathered-Kate-Hudson-with-Goldie-Hawn-guys.

Hey this is my kinda post!
My father, Galen Head, played on the Johnstown Jets team that the Charlestown Chiefs were based on. When I was a little kid, I grew up with a lot of the guys from the movie hanging around, including the Hansons (actually, the Carlson Brothers + Dave Hanson.) Most people are surprised when they find out how many people from the movie actually *were* hockey players at the time in the old league.
My father was an extra in Slapshot, but helped teach Paul Newman how to skate for the movie. When Paul Newman left town, he gave my parents his portable Sauna, which still sits in our basement (not put together anymore!).
My mom had a speaking part in the movie too. She was one of the three hockey wives that were always sitting in the stands. In fact, to this day, every time Slap Shot is on TV she gets a check for $50.
There are all kinds of cool stories I have heard over the years about all the Slap Shot people, and it's always been an interesting thing to talk about. In fact, I was visiting my parents last weekend and borrowed my moms photo album from the time and intend on scanning a lot of the photos to post to my flickr account one of these days.

Is this something I would need a Canadian to understand?
The only part you have to be Canadian to understand- well to WANT to understand- is how in the fuck three AMERICAN guys who represent the .01% of American boys who ever played hockey became minor icons that represent the 90% of Canadian boys who ever played hockey.
It's just like that movie Mystery, Alaska- filmed Canmore, Alberta, thank you very much- which could have been about any small town- ANY small town- in Canada.
I don't know why this pisses me off but it does. I'm an American immigrant here and a hockey nut, but I never even paid attention to hockey before living in Canada. It matters here. And as such there are tens of thousands of "Hanson brothers" here.

I used to live in Johnstown, PA where it was filmed. My dad is a PT and his sports buddies knew and loved Slapshot. I was so pumped to learn to skate on the same ice as in the movie (the war memorial). By the time I lived there (middle 80's) the local team WAS called the chiefs, I have a jersey. The town was too depressing though and we moved to CO, go Avs!

The three American guys are from Minnesota, where tons of little boys do actually play hockey.

Slap Shot's actually a really interesting, strange movie. LOL funny in lots of places, sure, but surprisingly dark throughout. It takes on a whole new dimension when you consider that this character study of completely idiotic, dysfunctional men was written by a woman.

Number of registered hockey players:
Country..........Players....% of Population
Canada..........543,390...1.64%
United States..435,737...0.15%
Not exactly orders of magnitude here.
