Real Giant Squids

Beautiful Squid. How I am obsessed with thee!! A legend, different than an octopus, rarely seen, oddly loved, making its home in the Mediterranean, and the far sea, the giant squid is one of the most elusive creatures of the deep. Even in death it produces treasure.
They don't play with fuckin' mr potato head dolls, though, do they? So fuck 'em.

This is some sort of viral marketing for Cloverfield, isn't it?

That's funny, because I had assumed Cloverfield was about the return of Cthulhu The Thing That Should Not Be Named.

When I was a kid, my parents saved a bunch of money and took my brothers and I to St. John's, and among my many memories of the trip is snorkeling around some coral covered rocks right off the beach where we camped. There were little cuttlefish hanging in the water everywhere, and they were beautiful - just sort of hanging there in the water, motionless. It might have been a trick of the light and water, but they seemed to be sort of rainbow-tinted. Then blip, they were gone, with little clouds of ink hanging around. A few minutes later, they'd be back. It was awesome. I've been a cephalopod fan ever since.

Also, the band a few doors down bores me to tears. Actual giant squid just scare me enough to cry... so thanks for the post! You win!

Every day should be Giant Squid Day! Posts on MetaFilter which are not about Giant Squid are the only thing preventing all the posts on MetaFilter from being about Giant Squid.

Ooh I saw the one in the Natural History Museum when it had just been brought ashore in the Falklands. They took it out of the freezer for a public showing one lunchtime and it was just sat on the floor in the middle of the warehouse at the dockside, defrosting slowly, with its huuuge eye watching everyone. The whole town went down to see it in their lunch hour. Just as I was leaving, the Governor arrived in his official car to visit it.
