Ashcan School. Gritty, realistic, oddly intriguing. Eighteen photographs of Ashcan School paintings. (From the Detroit Free Press, publicizing an exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts.)
I can't even begin to describe the amount of influence the Ashcan artists have had on my own work. Edward Hopper alone accounts for 50% of my knowledge of light and composition.

I love art that isn't "pretty." This art isn't pretty. I love it.

Those were terrific. I didn't know anything about the Ashcan School until I clicked on the links--thanks for the post. I'm intrigued by the focus on the working class/poor at a time when that wouldn't have been considered a suitable subject for art.
I realize that they were influenced by Impressionists, but I am still surprised at just how strongly many of the paintings reminded me of Degas, Renoir, Pisarro, and Mary Cassatt.

Aw cool. I love George Bellows, and am familiar with the Ashcan School, but I hadn't taken a good look at George Luks' work before. Pedro is beautiful.
