Lust after some stair porn (don't miss the details of the hanging box stairs), visit some glass igloos, and get comfy in some iconic furniture. That and much more is at materialicious, a blog about "architecture + design + materials + products."
Some really great design there and by "great design" I mean "useless in real life".

That Bedside Companion is a neat idea, but who the hell reads only one book at a time?

None of those stairs adhere to my local building codes, and quite frankly I wouldn't want to live anywhere they might.
Steep? Check. Slippery? Check. Jagged? Check. Uninterrupted? Check. Handrail? Nope! It's a perfect storm of neck-breakery.

This is gorgeous. I don't know if I'd want any of it in my home (those alternating staircases would suck if you were left footed), but they're still pretty to look at.

Yeah, I can picture a cocktail party followed by a lawsuit.
And what good's a staircase ya can't fuck safely on?

The bedside companion makes my inner - and by inner I mean "outer," because it's what I'm in training for - librarian/preservationist shriek.

Where's the staircase that turns into a slide at the push of a button? Like the ones you'd see in old cartoons. "April Fools, Grandma!"

When I first started drinking, I knew to call it quits for the night after I could no longer go up and down stairs. thank god I wasn't using THOSE stairs to judge.

I agree on most points... except for the stairs that double as some sort of storage. Except for the one floored in CD cases and lined with books. That one's kinda stupid. I mean, jewel cases are SHARP!

I wish to coin the following word:
Stairage == stair + storage

Don't stairs have to be "to code" or something?
Or is that only when you sell a house?

Fuzzy Skinner, I love that blog so much - thanks, I am going to have great fun exploring it. Love the stair porn, I want that stairway library.
I started poking around in the sidebar and found this most marvelous story under the recycled category.

C'mon. Not all of them violate US codes, and most of them can easily be adapted to meet codes wherever you are. Too steep? Stretch them out. Too slippery? Use a different surface. No handrail? Add one that fits the design.
