Pulitzer winners announced. Bothers me that the Miami Herald won a Pulitzer for "Elian"
I am thrilled that my favorite novel of 2000 -- and of several years previous -- Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay won. Chabon has been doing wonderful work and he truly deserved this. Read the book!

Hmmm . . . no Pulitzer for outstanding website in under 5k?

No $500 scholarships for best poster, either. Ripoff!
Clearly, the Haugheys will soon overtake the Pulitzers in the public imagination...

Hmmmm...take a look at the winners, and then take a look at the board, who make the final prize decisions. No big surprise, but somewhat lacking in integrity, no?

My god ... they're all ... all ... journalists!
Seriously, dude. It's a peer review award.

Owillis, why are you surprised the Elian photograph received a Pulizer? Isn't that image one of the most compelling photographs we've ever seen? Doesn't it describe the turmoil and tension of this event really well (not just returning him to his father but of the whole chapter in our social history)? I'm not surprised.

I do agree that the photo is unquestionably compelling Pulitzer material. I was mildly surprised there was no flaming-Concorde photo nominated (though they were by amateurs).
The other nominees were an Intifada photo -- the man with bloody hands from killing an Israeli soldier who'd been held in a PA police station -- and one from this remarkable series of photos of a gunman at a street fair in Rhode Island (this one was the nominee, but it really works better as a series). Story here. The whole roll of film is online, including a bleeding victim.

Why does it bother you that Elian won? It was a very concise summary of what is widely considered to be a gross overuse of force. The only people I've heard loudly and widely proclaiming the image as unnecessary are those who would have you unaware of what our government does to those who defy it.

It bothers me because it was overwrought coverage of a crap story about a bunch of idiot people who thought they were above the law of 2 countries.

Context: the photo was fine, deserved. not the overloaded coverage though

That's exactly, IMHO, what this photograph conveys.
