The Flip Flop Man

20 years ago, I'd have thought this guy was troubled. 10 years ago, I would have thought he was harmless. Now, I think he's an interesting fellow Floridian.
But not deserving of the batshitinsane tag.

Make of this what you will, but I immediately thought of Skink from from the Carl Hiaasen books.

Huh. Reminds me of this story from 2004 about how humans are (ostensibly) natural born long-distance runners.
Makes me want to get into running.

33 miles/day average for a year is certainly batshitinsane.

sigh...
Enjoyable character sketch, though--thanks! I can barely even walk in flip-flops.

Here's a more in depth article discussing Bramble's research into the 'natural born long distance runner' theory. Pretty interesting read.

Hah! Skink! That's great! He's one of the few larger-than-life heroes I can think of in literature... like, everyone can think of some great bad guys, like Hannibal Lecter... but thinking of dynamic, crazy-strong good guys is a lot tougher.
Sorry for the derail....

Yeah, he's crazy. But it's a good kind of crazy.
I can't run in flip flops (got I hate that term) because I have to scrunch up my toes to hold the things on. My Achilles tendons get all crampy.

I only like to run at night. Am I an enigma too?
Oh, I also don't like running in competition.
And I need a haircut.
What do you say? Character sketch material, eh? Charmingly different?

Actually that first video is interesting in general when watched after reading the article in the second link. Having read the article and so as far as I can tell, the man is not homeless or mentally handicapped or otherwise different. He just likes to run a lot. And yet the video has a whole bunch of people saying that that's what they first thought he must be. That and he's an "enigma." Defined, they think he is "an inscrutable or mysterious person." It's interesting how when anyone behaves outside of the norms they are automatically mental or an enigma, isn't it?
Anyway, good on him, and thanks for the post jimmy. Interesting story.
