You've probably seen Stuff White People Like before: it took off like wildfire internet-wide, and has been written about in The New Republic, Wired, the Boston Chronicle... there was even an NPR bit. (It was, unfortunately, too racy for Metafilter.*) It turns out that Random House will be publishing the book. By Christian Lander. 29, from Toronto, ... and white. Here's an interview.
* - We tried once, twice, and then had an epic metatalk thread about it.
SWPL: ok. I am white. here is another non surprise. there are pictures of me on the site. I'm the dude recycling. and the guy at dim sum. and the guy holding the iphone. and the bicycle picture is my bicycle. Also, now that I gave away the punchline, here is another story on it, from the LA Times.

This post was deleted for the following reason: removed at poster's request -- mathowie
Online stupidity tracker Get Off The Internet just pointed out SWPL's use of "RIGHT-WING TALKING POINT HAT TRICKS" to try and discredit free healthcare. Very perceptive glimpse of Lander's political leanings.

The punchline is that he's white?
I have a hard time believing that people who thought it was horrible, blood-curdling racism ever thought it might be written by someone who is white.

empath, good catch. When I initially saw the site, I had this exact reaction:
After reading several of the site’s posts, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something off about the entire venture
It did seem to me to be in many ways an attempt at a sly attack on progressive values and living patterns.

Totally, mikeh. Or as empath's link puts it:
Oddly enough, given the site’s name, there are no entries for Ayn Rand, Larry the Cable Guy, or NASCAR, despite their well-documented appeal to the melatonin-challenged sector of our society. Funny, that.
It's another grenade-lob in the culture wars, and I feel like a tool for having given it as much thought as I did.

White people making jokes about white people is like my brother reading a poem about lawn chairs. If you knew my brother, you'd get that. Well actually, you'd have to know him pretty well, but if you did, it'd be pretty funny. And by well, I don't just mean know him at work or chat with him at the bar. You'd have to pretty much know him for a few years and get beyond that courteous day-to-day small talk and really get to know him. You wouldn't have to be his absolute best friend, but somebody that spent some quality time with him. Which, if you knew my brother, isn't as easy as it sounds. Did I ever tell you about the time we tried to throw him a surprise birthday party, but by the time he got home most of us...sorry, I think I got off on a tengent. What we were we talking about? Betty White? She's the bomb.

a sly attack on progressive values
Sample entry:
#94 Free Healthcare
In spite of having access to the best health insurance and fanciest hospitals, white people are passionate about the idea of socialized medicine. So much so that they have memorized statistics and examples of how for-profit medicine has destroyed the United States.
...
And so on. Yes, I'm sure POOR people, many of whom are NON-WHITE, would scoff at the notion of their children receiving medical care. "That's for white people," they would say.

Personally, I thought otherwise-- yes, it did use those talking points but more as a humorous trope. I don't read SWPL because it's fair, I read it because it's funny-in-an-obnoxious-sort-of-way. The author makes those choices regardless of his actual political leanings.

This is just another tired version of: "Man I love living in New York/L.A./ San Francisco/Chicago, but all the people living here that I associate with are so LAME! lol." If I read one more fucking diatribe about how much you fucking urban hipsters hate all the other fucking urban hipsters I am going to fucking die. Hating on people who have large collections of vinyl or skinny jeans has absolutely no relevance to 90% of America because all of you congregate in a dozen large cities that we don't live in. You don't like all you douche bags? Move back to where you grew up. Avoiding people like you is why some of us never left.

Wow. The stuffy, humorless, unable-to-take-a-joke tsk-tsking of that "Get Off The Internet" link does more to stereotype white liberals than the entire Stuff White People Like site. Which, you know, is a satire. It's annoying that some people (people who I have a lot in common with, socially and politically) can't take some gentle ribbing about their lifestyle but cheer every time The Daily Show points out some more Republican hypocrisy or stupidity.

Metafilter got it right. I simply do not understand what is so interesting about this site. I am, however, fascinated by the media interest in it. Especially how they use it as a springbaord to discuss race, instead of, you know, using something more relevant like financial and educational disparities. I could sit here and write that this site uses "White" as an adjective devoid of any meaning whatsoever. The site could replace "White People" with "rich people," "people from Oregon," or "vegetarians" and it would provoke the exact same non reaction. But to comment in this way would be fall fall into the trap of discussing the site on it's merits, which has the effect of conferring upon it the illusion that it has substance.
What is more illuminating is the press response. The dead-tree press loves this story precisely because it let's them cast the internet as something light and frivolous. Nothing serious happens on the internet, you see. It's all PostSecret, and We're Sorry, and StuffWhitePeopleLike. These magazines and newspapers use stories about sites like this to restrict the discussion of the internet to the style pages and the Life section. See, the internet is a new form of television. There is funny stuff there for you to look at, but that's it. Because God forbid their readers discover that the internet has already replaced the paper or magazine they're reading, and that furthermore it's free.
Furthermore, the press covers sites like this precisely because they know people are going to be discussing their articles about that site. This helps to reinforce their authority and elevate themselves above the internet, which is eviscerating their business.
This is not to offend or criticize blacklite, because blogs all over are picking up the story of newspapers picking up the story of SWPL, but so what if a newspaper is talking about it? Does the fact that an old-time newspaper is discussing the site validate our enjoyment of it, and by extension, validate our taste and judgment? Is it okay for us to like this site now that the grown-ups in print journalism have given it their blessing?
Why does it matter to us that the newspapers are picking up on this? I think this is an important question, and I think the answer, whatever it is, goes a long way to explaining why people still read newspapers at all even though the internet has rendered them totally obsolete.

You see, I think that would actually be racist. One of the reasons the site is funny because it makes fun of the penchant of some people to think they're normal and mainstream while actually pointing out that their preferences and predilictions are part of a rather narrow cultural milieu. But the site is making fun of my cultural milieu, so I feel obligated to defend it from those who are so dismissive.
I have a stack of graduate degrees, I live in a hip neighborhood, and I have a large record collection. I expect you to make fun of me. An entire web site dedicated to mocking evangelicals who like dumb comedies and NASCAR is just... pointless.
However, I probably would have flagged it as a bad post when people posted it to metafilter. "Best of the Web" != "amusing blog everyone has already seen."

Obviously there is a large enough group of people who get a chuckle out of this to warrant the expense of publishing a book. It seems to me enough to registrar yr dislike, contempt, or outright disgust one time and leave it at that. Why keep posting over and over about how much time yr not going to waste on this? You wanna censor what others (myself not included) like? Just say you hate it, flag and move along. This seems to me a poor place to choose a left/right battle. I guess I'm flummoxed by the outrage this elicits and am forced to wonder if some of us don't have some very thin skins.
