Cow Fighting Swiss Style

For the 2nd year in a row Tina is crowned la Reine des Reines (link & video in french). Le Combat des Reines is an annual event in the Swiss canton of Valais dating back to 1922.

Limited to cows of the local Hérens breed, the battle consists of the 2 cows pushing each other (with blunted horns) until one backs off. Fights can last from a few seconds to 40 minutes.

I think Chilli's willy disqualifies him from a cow contest.

I originally had something to say about the post, but now I'm left mostly speechless. That IS a big goddamned cow.

Oh, and from the huge fucking cow article:

"Despite his grand stature, Chilli only grazes on grass during the day and enjoys the occasional swede as a treat."

manwhat. Can someone explain to me what they are referring to when they say swede there? See, because my only frame of reference is either unhelpful or terrifying.

Also, the original post? It's like cow SUMO. Awesome.

Again, he's not a cow.

Swede = Rutabaga. It's a UK name.

Stunt - I believe you may know swede as rutabaga. And, sorry but Chili is a gormless looking fucker. Tina would destroy the lanky twat.

Again, he's not a cow.

This led me to an entertaining discussion with my co-workers the other day: what is the singular of cattle? Specifically, when you don't know the gender of the animal you are referring to?

As they all stood there thinking about it, with their eyes turned to the heavens, I moved in and stole their lunches.

I never got an answer, but mmm, peanut butter and jelly... nom nom nom.

I beleave they are know as Rutabaga on the other side of the Atlantic (well that's what wikipedia tells me.) Though given the size of the thing I wouldn't put it pass them to have shoved the odd inhabitant of Sweden that may have been passing into its trough.

I saw it in the proper newspapers the other day but it really needs the tabloids for the multi pictures. It's like the size of a shire horse!

Stunt : that damned British English again. A swede is a rutabega, the same way a 'fag' is a cigarette, 'well chuffed' means you're pleased, and 'Boris Johnson' means 'Jim Traficant'.

dammit, must remember to preview!

Well then. Thanks to everyone who rushed to reassure me that huge bovines do not in fact devour scandinavians. I suppose a quick google search would have answered my question, but silly me thought that googling swede wouldn't be helpful.

In hindsight, my frantic attempt to convince a vegetarian friend that he had to start eating beef for the good of swedekind might have been premature.

That looks like the most beautiful place in the world to have a cow fight.

I respectfully request more photos of big cows.

They're bullocks, not cows in the video of the fight are they not? The Yi people of Sichuan and Yunnan and a few other scattered spots fight cattle in a similar style

Oh, take it back...watched the one at the newspaper now and them's some swingin' udders. I suppose Tina should have been a bit of a gender clue too. Doh.
