I read that too, and thought it had to be a suicide; no one would do that accidentally, not even a lunatic idiot!

I've been told this does happen accidentally, generally to experienced jumpers when they get a little too at ease with the sport and careless. Specifically I was told of a recent case where an instructor went up with a couple of students without intending to jump himself. After his students exited, he changed his mind in the plane on the spur of the moment, having completely forgotten that he had not put on a chute. It's possible that this is a legend intended to scare you into being rigorous about following the routine, but I found it at least plausible.

Yeah... just read more on this in the Albany Times Union... certainly a suicide. When I first read the article it seemed like a failed internet stunt copying this one.

But yeah... it was different.
