The band are an influential UK band that operated in the late 80's and early 90's as trailblazers of the Indie Shoegazing scene. Only releasing two well acclaimed albums, they were allegedly responsible for the bankruptcy of Creation Records although that is now under dispute.
The gigs were well received, and yours truly was fortunate enough to catch them on the last date. The final track was outstanding. And painful. For me, here is their best (and yes most famous but still....) track.

Pitchfork linked to an mp3 boot of an entire show last week. Sounded pretty goddamn nice.

Agreed on all counts. Loveless is definitely in my top 20 favorite albums, but there's not much substance here. Now, a catalog of the best MBV tracks on youtube (scroll down), that would be awesome.

Apologies, especially the bork - I'm still recovering. I've seen some loud gigs in my time, but this was just....something else. Obviously, a YT won't do it justice, but the ground was shaking, and people were stumbling out of the venue.....

A mate went to it and said that for that last (25 minute?) noise encore people were stumbling about, hands clamped to their ears. A bit much?

I have tickets for the Santa Monica show in October, and I am already reminding myself that I need to bring earplugs.
Still terribly excited about it though!

Aren't they swinging 'round these parts soon? As in, the US?

Last I checked, Santa Monica was in the US...
Though it is occasionally called the Republik of Santa Monika, so I can see how you'd get confused ;)

Christ, what an asshole, you forgot The Green Pajamas.
I usually throw in the Swirlies for purely aesthetic reasons, but feel free to disagree.

Going to see them in Toronto when they come 'round. Can't wait. Happy to hear about the earplugs. That's just good common sense.

When I think of MBV, my next-door-neuron is the Swirlies. And then Medicine.

I don't believe "shoegaze" applies to the former or "modern" to the latter.
The one band I did neglect to mention is Asobi Seksu. Their album, Citrus, is one of the first records I'd point to in addressing everything that's right with music today. Hopefully my band can pull off a tour with them soon...

Saw the Monday gig, absolutely amazing, one of the gigs of the year so far. The noise during that last 20 minutes was pretty intense; you know it's loud when your jeans are flapping about independantly of your legs due to the volume.

I was there on Monday night too. The last bit was amaaaazing. I leaned over and shouted in my friend's ear "he's entertaining us with the sounds of war!". Not that he could hear me or anything.
Anyone who's seeing them - do not, repeat, do not refuse the earplugs. You won't really need them till the end, but then, you will.

Damn, I'd love to see them. I doubt they'll venture near my neck of the woods though. Hopefully the new album materializes at some point in the not-too-distant future.
