Completely new websites!

Tired of the current web? Have all the cool domain names already been registered? The second web bills itself as geocities 2.0 with a web browser-esque interface stuck on top of it "a completely new World Wide Web. A new Web Browser, a new domain name system and completely new websites."

I, too, have a completely new World Wide Web to offer.

In my pants.

And it is EXPLODING.

it is also under a DDOS attack

Also: I used the second web browser to browse www.thesecondweb.com.

RECURSIVE FAIL.

It's like orangatango, but 10 years later and with the texture and flavor of spam.

Similar to Second Life, the main trouble with this website is that I need to use money from my First Web to purchase a space in the second one.

Don't forget to press F11 for maximum secondweb enjoyment!
posted by slater at 12:44 AM on September 30, 2008

How is this even of theoretical use without some sort of search engine or portal? You're pretty much limited to just typing in random URLs to see what whacky scheme the squatters have come up with.

CNN.com is now the Citizen's News Network? Cah-ray-zee!

(I also like how their bizarro-Yahoo is just a search box that not only brings you results from the real web when used but also kicks the fake browser bar back into the ether, to boot.)

Oh, I see now that they have a Directory button, but it won't be operational until November.

It doesn't look like an upgrade from 1995-era "Internet? What Internet?" MSN, & if you're trying to get me to move away from that, you're going to have to give me something that actually works in HotJava.

I tried to register www.thescondwebblows.com but I decided the $5 would be better spent by setting a $1 bill on fire and burning a stack of 4 other $1 bills with the original flaming $1 bill.

This domain name may be availible for registration, check here!

That's really credable.

I pressed F11 only to be briefly terrified that I would be stranded in the second web forever (before I realized F11 toggled fullscreen).

And btw some poking around led me to notice that yahoo.com has colonized the second web (can't really link to it...), but the search engine at yahoo's second web page searches the first web, not the second web. Also it transports you back to the first web when you search. I feel like yahoo isn't really emotionally invested in this second web concept. And I guess Google was too cool for the second web - they seem to have had the corresponding google homepage removed for copyright reasons.

Hey I have a cool idea! Buy thirdweb domain name and squat inside them! Eventually the whole screen will be taken up by browser bars, and you'll be squinting trying to see the nekkid ladies crammed into three rows of pixels at www./www.thesecondweb.net/www.thirdweb.do/www.fourthweb.yes/www.fifthweb.new/www.sixthweb.yo/www.hotnekkidladiesrighthere.com

Can I pay for my secondweb domain with Flooztm?

I feel sorry for the clueless venture capitalists who funded this.

Wake me when Thesecondwebbrowser is supplanted by Shmire-shmox.

Wait. So it this web 3.0 or web 2.0.1 or what?
Web 2.0 version 2.

Ah, for the halcyon days of 2000, when I could have invested fifty dollars in this at the IPO and been a millionaire by 10:30 AM.

Much more pleasant than the market today, when I have to encase that fifty dollars in lucite to avoid its scent being picked up by any roving packs of feral former investment bankers that happen to wander near my house.

Second web may be down, but just like Windows, SP1 will fix it and make everything wonderful and perfect forever!

Until SP2 comes along.

These Second Web guys are mavericks. They don't play by the rules! They eschew conventional domain names and arbitrary ICANN standards! They're nonconformists who are gonna forge their own Internet whether you like it or not, daddy-o!

Oh, who am I kidding, these guys are the kinds of Adventure Capitalists who, at this same time next month, will be pitching a brand-new Internet experience where instead of viewing web sites you "beam in the cyber web nodes."

Unless informed otherwise, I'll assume they're using 'thesecondweb.net' because 'secondweb.net' was squatted and the owner wanted too much money for it?

So this is really a form of acting out, isn't it? They're bitter they didn't get the domain name they wanted, they didn't get the free-flowing IPO dollars they wanted, and they didn't even get a decent colo.

I'm sure somebody at Kleiner Perkins will put them on speed dial the moment they learn about this.

That is such an incredibly shit idea. Bordering on fraud if you ask me - sure, I'll pay $5 for a domain name no one will ever see that exist on one or only a few centralised servers...

I think they are being somewhat deceptive about what exactly their site is - hoping people will pay money for a virtual address within another website.
