huh. wondered if there were any genuine medicinal uses for nicotine and came across a bunch of articles, including this one that answers a question for me why the schizophrenics from the halfway house in my neighborhood are such compulsive smokers:
There is now also some new data indicating that nicotine can normalize some of the psychophysiological deficits seen in patients with schizophrenia. This may explain the high prevalence of smoking among schizophrenics and could lead to novel therapeutic approaches
