RIP Delaney Bramlett

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Delaney Bramlett has died at 69.
Delaney was a regular on Shindig! before meeting his first wife Bonnie (you might remember her from Roseanne). They found some commercial success with "Never Ending Song Of Love" and a cover of "Only You Know and I Know," and co-wrote (with Leon Russell) the future Carpenters classic "Groupie (Superstar)." But they were most famous for making friends.

Delaney and Bonnie are right up there in my personal-best musicians list. Along with Bach, Tom Waits and Thelonious Monk. Oh, and the Beatles and Mozart and B.B. King and ...

Ironically, Delaney and Bonnie were just in our thoughts, due to question 14 in Jon Carroll's annual Holiday Quiz.

(did he really teach Harrison to play with a slide?)
"The man himself disagrees: 'One time he asked me if I would teach him how to play slide and, later, George said I'd taught him how to play it. Well, he did make that statement—but I didn't teach him anything. George already knew how to play guitar, he just wanted to know my technique, what I thought about it and what I did. All I did was teach him my style of playing.'"

Also, his website says that he "played guitar on the instrumental hit 'Tequila' for The Champs." If true, it must have been one of his first recordings.

They did one hell of a "Come On In My Kitchen," and he will be missed.

Don't forget that Delaney Bramlett co-wrote the song, Superstar.
Any song that sounds good whether it's done by Cher, the Carpenters, Sonic Youth, or Chris Farley & David Spade in Tommy Boy can't be all bad.
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh baby...
