Uptime, a free web server monitoring service I (and many others) have used for over 4 years, is going down for good. Arsdigita is taking it offline tomorrow at 5PM ET, and instead is offering the source. I suppose it probably has something to do with this.
Hmm.. somewhat depressing. It's really odd how situations like that (where people do things with good intentions) can be twisted around so completely by things like greed..

It is a shame that Phil has to rebuild things as it were, but he can't really be stopped. He has created too much good karma.
The bastards will run Arsdigita into the ground eventually. Perhaps Phil can snag it back from the Abyss?

dsl-reports does, but you have to visit their website regularly. I didn't, so my company's client got removed (then I got laid off, so I didn't care anyway).

I think both Netwhistle and NetMechanic offer site monitoring, but they aren't free. Twenty (or fifteen, respectively) bucks a month seems steep for such a simple service.

From ArsDigita:
Dear Uptime User, posted by laze at 1:28 PM on June 8, 2001
Based on the feedback we have received from users in the last 24 hours, we will continue running the Uptime service as is. However, we would like to encourage ACS community contributions toward maintaining and enhancing this and other free services.
We believe that the largest contribution we can make to the ACS community is to continue to develop new and improved versions of ACS rather than divert our resources to maintaining free services. If anyone has new or improved versions of Uptime, please let us know. In the meantime, we will leave the current service running rather than shut it down.
Again, please send questions/comments to webmaster@arsdigita.com.
Thanks,
The ArsDigita.com Team
