The Bride Who Crawled Through a Tunnel

"Gaza Love Story: The Bride Who Crawled Through a Tunnel" "He lived in the Gaza Strip, she in the West Bank. It seemed as though the Israeli blockade would prevent their marriage. Then May risked her life to crawl through a smugglers' tunnel into Gaza and join Mohammed. Now they face an uncertain future together."
It ends well-ish. No sign that this is a John McCain style story.

Hopefully they did not invest in the tunnels: Hamas Finds Gaza Tunnels’ $500 Million Loss Worse Than Madoff

A bit odd that it was not the man who went to get to his love...at least with the two in the Wet Bank they would not be under the heels of Hamas. Wonder if that tunnel, now known, is still useable.

It is slowly dawning on the young couple that those first glowing days of happiness could soon be over. May misses her mother.
Uh-oh. There goes the honeymoon. Now her mother is going to pop out of that tunnel with a couple of large suitcases and no smile.
It is slowly dawning on them? They live in a shithole place with 40 percent unemployment, they are up to their tits in debt, and he gets 25 dollars a month working for the opposition to Hamas in a place ruled by Hamas.

I thought about making a Jets/Sharks joke earlier... but my heart wasn't in it. This shit is depressing.

"This shit is depressing."
Yeah. But May is amazing, and Mohammed seems to know that, so it seems optimistic, too.

Sad. They seem doomed. I hope that even a year from now they are still happy and May is still sure that she did the right thing.

What's tragic is the collective punishment that keeps Palestinians separated. What's tragic is that the tunnels need to exist, lest thousands of people starve. What's tragic is that it's American dollars that propagate this disaster of human rights.
