Os Gameboys are a band from Brazil who play only music from classic videogames. They are really, really good. (via waxy: "the best live Mario cover I've ever seen")
I read as "are banned in Brazil." You're right. These guys rock.

The keyboardist is a little overly twitchy, especially in the Chemical Plant Zone, but the rendition of Casino Night Zone is just gorgeous.
Thanks, joshwa.

Nothing can touch Ozma's cover of the tetris song.

Yes.
Thanks for this, the main videos were a fun watch, but I owe many thanks to Blazecock Pileon for helping me realize that I need to learn to play the theremin.

Minibosses have them beat, I think.
Castlevania. Contra. The too often ignored Mario game.

Oh, the ToeJam & Earl cover is nice. That is a game that needs to be listened to far, far more often.

The Mario one is especially nice for the little gimmicks they throw in, like the cartridge glitching....

I prefer The Advantage, myself.
(Looks like their website got squatted though)

That theremin guy also did a cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" that cracked me up when I found it a year or two ago.
(Also, these guys are pretty great...)

Oh god oh god I love the Sonic music so much. I think I said this in a dream once:
The keyboardist is a little overly twitchy, especially in the Chemical Plant Zone, but the rendition of Casino Night Zone is just gorgeous.

The Advantage's Dr. Wily was all right, and the Minibosses give it a good go, but Missing Nin's version is the best ever. Unfortunately, Missing Nin is...missing -- I can't seem to find anything about them on the Web at all.

Man, I played Sonic so much back in the day, and of course when you played Sonic you had to sing along.
"Sonic the goofy hedgehog
He's such a goofy hedgehog
Sonic the goofy hedgehog
He's really a goofy hedgehog
Because
He runs and jumps
To rescue his friends
From that fiend Dr. Robotnik!"
Don't tell me it was just me...

I looove the music to the Sonic series. It's more reminiscent of childhood summers than any other song for me.
And Michael Jackson might have done the music!
That is the third and final time I post that link to Metafilter. I so desperately want it to be true.
Toejam and Earl... that also takes me back.

I think the guitarist is fudging the chord progression on Kakariko Village, though. I've, uh, looked at that one in a bit of detail before.

It's hard for me not to have a soft spot for Metroid Metal. I mean, it just makes so much sense.

Just go to PAX to see good video game themed music. Metroid Metal? Check. Minibosses? Check.
Having been a consumer of video game music for the past half a decade, I gotta say that os Gameboys are GREAT. The One Ups are the best, though. They've got a TJ & E rendition of their own, and their Mii Channel is classic.
