Baking the Cherpumple

Renound "Histo-Tainer" Charles Phoenix, who gives slide shows of found 35mm slides, bakes a Cherpumple. (think turducken, but with cake.)
Charles Phoenix is so FUN! As he says in the video, this is all about Americana. I'm a little curious about this cake, but think it should be featured on www.thisiswhyyourefat.com !
And the Turducken HAS been improved upon: The Bakeyducken! It's a Turducken wrapped in bacon, of course!

I am also horrified that this was all precooked and cake mix. I mean sure, it'd be time consuming to make three pies and three cakes, but Jesus, you're in a museum full of classic cooking machines that weep pastel enamel tears at the heresy of baking an all-mix diabetes death dessert within their classic interiors.

HOLY COW, I just gained ten pounds watching that.
Seriously, not a homemade delicacy in the whole batch? If I'm going to eat something that makes my heart explode, I'd like to feel some real effort went into killing me.

If John Waters and William H. Macy had a baby, that baby would be Charles Phoenix.

Cake mixes were a huge hit among many Genuine Retro Housewives in the 50s, so I don't fault Phoenix for not trying to Have It All. It's period.
Anyway, I'm taking the video as a proof of concept only. Now that I know you can do this, it makes planning the next birthday cake-thing I make from scratch all the more intriguing. I wonder how carrot cake and sweet potato-apple pie would go together?

hmmmm.... proof of concept.
That's a good way to look at this.
hmmm.... (there's gotta be something that will marry pecan pie).

In conclusion this is ridiculous, unappetizing, AND LAZY.
Dude, you so totally don't get it. He stuffed camp inside kitsch! IT IS THE AWESOMEST THING EVER YOU GUYS

I keep checking, and I can't stop seeing "hipsto-tainer" above. Now I'm trying to figure out if having a hipster-tainer in my mind made me deeply dislike this guy, or if deeply disliking this guy has forced a subconscious hipster linkage.
"ridiculous, unappetizing, AND LAZY" isn't helping to sever that connection, BTW

The cherry pie layer was to be the top layer, but his final product had it as the middle layer. I have nothing else to add.

The resounding CLUNK with each layer added to the cake stand, and the final THUD as the first slice went onto a plate really made this video for me.

Oh my god, I misspelled the very first word of my very first mefi post.
For the record: I meant renowned but somehow typed renound.
Must have been the Cherpumple talking.

Yes, feel free to imagine me, with cake. (I'm doing it right now.)
By coincidence, I used to run into Charles Phoenix all the time at the kitschy toy store/cafe near my old office.

You all know how much I love cake.
I'm with maudlin - concept is kind of awesome, and yeah, mixes are totally retro. New, snazzy mixes for the housefrau! Or, in my case, the housekasten. But blerg to those premade pies. I suppose you could make a smaller version with the Table Talk pies...oh no, this is a dangerous road to go down with the incoming snow...
Historian-entertainer? Man, that took me longer than I liked to de-shorten and translate.

Hybrid pecan/pumpkin pies are delicious. Pumpkin on the bottom, pecan on top.

Second, he used pre-mixed cake and store bought pies. Really? Why not just skip all that and eat the boxes they came in, they would taste more or less the same.
Third, he didn't even make the frosting. Frosting! I mean, cream cheese frosting is ridiculously easy to make (cream cheese, butter, sugar, vanilla, mix until blended, wow sooooo hard.)
In conclusion this is ridiculous, unappetizing, AND LAZY.
Do. Not. Want.
