LCD Soundsystem and their LA Mansion

LCD Soundsystem has released a short series of surprisingly interesting promotional videos for their as yet unannounced album showing James Murphy and collaborators dicking around the LA Mansion where they recorded it (3, 2, 1). The first single from the new album, Drunk Girls, has been released to pitchfork.
James Murphy told us that the song is "about drunk people and fun things and the fact that all of the boys of the L.A. mansion we recorded at were called 'the girls' by our chef. We were the ladies of the mansion.

A minor correction Drunk Girls is the second single, the first single from the album was Bye Bye Bayou

I love James.. he's like a grumpy hipster :) Not sure this falls into BOTW, but whatevs.

Whoops, correction to my correction.. I guess Bye Bye Bayou's not on the album.

Carry on :D

Correction correction! Bye Bye Bayou, according to that youtube page, "won't be featuring on their next album which is due March 2010." But yea, it's pretty sweet.

Absolute BOTW. Loved it.

LCD Soundsystem provided a perfect sound track during my motorcycle commute on Thursday morning. That's all I have to contribute to this post at this time.

Beatles vs LCD Soundsystem vs the Kinks

Finally, a mashup I like.

Is that the same house from Californication? Besides the same huge flag on the ceiling, the room looks the same.

"Drunk Girls" is a nice song but it feels more like an album track than a single to me. I'm eager to hear it in the context of the larger album.

loved this, thanks.
Losing my edge, when I first heard it, struck me as one of the most honest songs a hipster has ever made. Still does. Which, granted, isnt' really saying much, but still.

Well thylacine, perhaps you aught to make a product which a sufficiently large audience considers to be 'Awesome' and will buy from you, because right now the market for heaping spite online has pretty much collapsed.

As it stands, on the lines of 'losing my edge', I thought All My Friends was a shockingly tender song for a band that loves to rock out so hard. (This live performance being proof you can have both at once.)

Is that the same house from Californication?

Yup, it's Rick Rubin's recording/production abode, aka "The Mansion." RHCP recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magic here, as documented in the film Funky Monks (available in its entirety on YT, btw).

The other albums recorded there, according to Wikipedia:

Marilyn Manson: Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)
American Head Charge: The War of Art
The Mars Volta: De-Loused in the Comatorium
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Fortune Faded & Save the Population (from the sessions of an as yet, unreleased album)
Slipknot: Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)
System of a Down: Mezmerize & Hypnotize
Ours: Dancing for the Death of an Imaginary Enemy
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Stadium Arcadium
Linkin Park: Minutes to Midnight
Maroon 5 : It Won't Be Soon Before Long

So yeah, it's haunted.

Outstanding use of the "dicking" tag.

"Drunk Girls" is a nice song but it feels more like an album track than a single to me.

I felt the same way about North American Scum from Sound of Silver until I listened to it a zillion times.

I'm eager to hear it in the context of the larger album.

I'm excited about both!!

Wish I was one of those people who are smart enough to get paid getting fucked up and making shit music all day long.

Finally, someone who agrees with me! See, I too begrudge a man who has slogged through the music scene for two decades while somehow managing to maintain a unique voice, top-notch production values, and keen satirical sense the opportunity to work on his art. Where do these people get off, writing intelligent, odd-ball pop songs and getting paid to do it? It just gets my goat is what it gets, if I'm going to be 100% honest with you. Gets it bad.

Oh hay, they are kind of similar. I fully expect an eventual mashup.

The secret, I believe, is just to do it. Decide you're a worthy artist(e), quite your day job, find a crumbling manse somewhere, install a studio, do drugs etc.

Eventually, you will either die pathetically or Lady Gaga will hear about you via Youtube ... and so on.

LA?!?!?

What a bunch of sellout poseur douchebags.

Really, lots of light, temperate weather, swimming pools and huge spaces are not conducive to creativity. Just look at what tripe usually comes out of that city.

Git yer ass back to a NYC basement that you can barely afford. Now we're talking.

not really anti-LA, just can't help myself. :)

I remember reading a few years ago that James Murphy doesn't do drugs anymore [citation needed].

As for this new single, it's a grower like most of the LCD Soundsystem singles. For those who've mentioned that it sounds like an "album track," let me assure you that, when heard live, those "album tracks" come alive like you wouldn't believe.

It was during the LA recording that Aziz Ansari (of Parks & Rec, etc) tweeted this picture, which shows all the crazy stuff James Murphy was getting up to in The Mansion.

LCD Soundsystem, like most indie-electronica, is aggressively bland. This is my opinion.
