More than 30 members of the Opera Company of Philadelphia Chorus and cast members of La traviata performed a flash opera in the aisles of Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.

somewhere at about 2 min when there was a little lady with grey hair who was entranced and engaged by this, I started to smile.

My favorite verse:
Godiam, la tazza e il cantico
la notte abbella e il riso
Let us be happy: the glass, the songs and the laughter make the night more beautiful.
I miss Italy, tonight.

Beautiful! Wish this happened to me when I was out and about.

That will be the only gig they've got pretty soon, if you know the current state of the opera business.

I used to own that railroad, along with three others. Man I miss that place.

Wow, that was way better than I expected. I remember seeing some prior spontaneous opera thing that kind of fell flat, but this was just lovely.

Fuck my life I miss Philadelphia. Reading Terminal was two blocks from my fucking awesome apartment (where we had the MeFi 10!), and I while I generally think that the Opera Company of Philadelphia is kind of sucktastic, I know that's just because I was spoiled and raised on Houston Grand Opera, and I would have KILLED TO SEE THIS IN PERSON!
I missed it too, and my office isn't far from RTM. And I've been meaning to get over there at lunchtime for days. Grrr.
(Opera Company of Philadelphia gave us a a pretty great Nathan Gunn in Pearl Fishers. Also, nearly naked.)

This is awesome! And while I was visiting Philadelphia that weekend, apparently my right-place-at-the-right-time skills need dialed in just a bit.

This is all neat and shit but these people just need to not get between me and my lunch or I will chow down on a mother fucker's neck.

omg Straightener, you just made me remember Hershel's hot pastrami on rye with mustard and a pickle and I'm crying at my desk. Or Saturday mornings with the NY Times, listening to some homeless woman plunk out "Three Times a Lady" on the piano over in the Amish corner, eating blueberry pancakes, turkey bacon, hashbrowns and an apple dumpling. Thanks.

Several lunchers were booing, one threw batteries, and one projectile vomited on the performers.

Duuuuude, can't do it today but why didn't you tell me you wanted to hit it up, I'm there at least 3x per week. Unfortunately I'm in court the rest of the week but let's do next. I'mma get a cheese steak from the dude at Spataro's with the Juggalo tattoos and missing teeth.

BSO did something similar back in March. Members of the cast disguised themselves as Whole Foods employees.

I checked out Reading Terminal, eating a roast pork Italian (that's roast pork au jus with garlicky broccoli rabe, and very sharp provolone, FYI) from DiNic's on behalf of Metafilter.
I am sad to report that there was no flash mob opera today. I'm committed to returning at your behest to check, though.

Does the hot guy at DiNics still work there? You know the one - skinny, perfect bronze skin, straight black hair that hangs in his eyes that you want to brush out of the way just before you kiss him? I mean, they have great food too, but that's not why I ate there. *swoon*

Man, I miss Philly too. No one ever gives it the props it deserves as a vibrant big city. I have no idea why i have spent the last decade on the West Coast instead of being at home in Philly. Reading Terminal Market>Ferry Terminal Market.
