SIGGRAPH 2010

A preview of SIGGRAPH 2010, which is already producing the usual spate of demonstration videos, some fascinating, some slightly disturbing.
For a quick preview of the future, check out the Emerging Technologies Trailer and overviews of the presentations. Or maybe you're more interested in the Computer Animation Festival Trailer.
First off in the fascinating department, Rigid-Body Fracture Sound demonstrates realistic computer generated sound effects to go along with smashing realistic computer generated crockery.
For display technologies, there's the Multi-Layered Display with Water Drops and the Camera-less Smart Laser Projector (technical paper [pdf].
For input, there's the 3D Input Interface for Mobile Devices (called In-air Typing Interface in the trailer), some more footage of the Lumino Building Blocks, and an explanation of the Haptic Canvas.
And in the slightly disturbing department, there's Parametric Reshaping of Human Bodies in Images, which suggests that the airbrushing that used to be the province of fashion magazines will soon become ubiquitous.
For a little more information on some of the projects from the emerging technologies trailer:

- Check out the Matrix LED Unit website, which promises that a kit will be coming soon.
- A paper on the FuSA2 touch display [pdf, Japanese] has some nice pictures that help explain how the display works.
That crashy sound thing is awesome. I was about to do an FPP on just that by itself.

I covet my VHS cassette of Geri's Game that I picked up at SIGGRAPH '97. I have no way of watching it and it's available in super hi-def these days, but I covet it nonetheless.

I want a game where it's my job to smash stuff and generate those realistic breaking noises. Preferably whole rooms of it.
Great post, btw.

Re: The parametric thing -- I can't wait to open a GAP ad printed on e-paper and targeted at me, and find that all the models magically share my unspectacular figure.
I just hope that the poor models get to keep their smiling faces as a result of this procedure

Awesome as always and I too checked out the parametric reshaping demo first. Impressive in some parts, not in others since it doesn't isolate the subjects from the background.

So, the rigid body sound thing - that's basically generating the sound based on the objects as they fall?
Can we invert that so we can make objects generated by sound? Cuz. I wanna see Bucephus Bouncing Ball Mix by Aphex Twin generate a visual bouncy thing.

I'll be presenting on behalf of Disney Research at the emerging tech demos, if anyone wants to drop by.

If this is making anyone itch to see some older (awesome) SIGGRAPH papers, this site has a great archive of them and other computer graphics conferences.
