... CBGB of video games.

Then I can't wait for the GG Allin and the Murder Junkies of video games.

Silent Barn isn't in Brooklyn (but it is really close) and isn't a bar either (I think it's still BYOB). Interesting place, though.

The indie music and indie games scenes collide in a Brooklyn bar.....In a Queens neighborhood, the birth of indie video games

Somebody needs to check their subway map.

It's the L'amour's East of video games.

It start's out full of dancing cugines, then goes metal?

Babycastles sounds pretty awesome. I'm definitely gonna check it out. Thanks!

And also, empath (and the LA Times): give Queens some credit. The article treats Something Cool in Queens like sports teams with stadiums in New Jersey. They're still referred to as "New York" teams—and hip Brooklyn spots in this case—for whatever reason. It's irritating.

defenestration: let's keep the 'cool' stuff in Brooklyn, thanks.

OK, jonmc. Yes sir. Just please don't revoke my borough-crossing privileges!

You asked for it. (Totally SFW.)

As someone who has made one (1) indie game, I don't think I'm qualified to call myself an indie game developer.

But I am in a coffee shop right now, with Visual studio open, trying to get a 3rd person camera to work. It's like writing a novel, but 100x more tedious.

Silent Barn was one of my favorite venues when I lived in New York. It's basically someone's house that happens to have a huge rec room. Nice to see they did something cool with the basement!

I love the inane breathless tone… Why, there are video game hipsters that for some reason chose to congregate near other kinds of hipsters? Don't they know that now one bad case of PBR could kill them all?

A person who tells a lie is a liar, and a person who steals is a thief, so I think you can call yourself an indie game developer. :D

Hey guys, I help organize some stuff for Babycastles. I just got back from a planning meeting, actually. We've got a ton of great events coming up in the next few months in the New York area. Some at the Silent Barn space, and others at some other places in Manhattan or Brooklyn proper.

One of the major goals for Babycastles is to create a way for indie game developers, especially those in the New York area, to expose their games to more people who are interested in playing them, and ultimately to make a living so that our local game development culture can thrive and grow. If that idea appeals to you at all, please do try to make it out! The energy at our opening parties when we introduce a new set of games has been wonderful.

And it really warms my heart to come to random music performances and see concert-goers trying out the latest from Cactus or some NYU student project and get so absorbed they forget to go back upstairs for a little while.

Thanks for posting this, empath!

(P.S. we laugh about the CBGB's reference. We see ourselves as more of an ABC No Rio.)
